How is Disgaea DS anyway? Considering maybe picking that up...

Which would be better, Disgaea or FFT or FE?

FE > Disgaea > Dog poop > FFT.

Best SRPG's are in this order:

Final Fantasy Tactics > Disgaea 1 > Fire Emblem Series > Disgaea 2 > Ogre Tactics > Phantom Brave/La Pucelle

These are your must play games:

Final Fantasy Tactics

Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Yikes. I couldn't disagree with that list more.

Tactics Ogre is way better then the Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics games in both gameplay and story.

Though the Disgaea games to get points for having fun stories.

FFT is nothing but a dumbed down Tactics Ogre. It's still an ok game. I'm actually playing it right now. It's literally playing on my TV. But it's nowhere near top of the SRPG world. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a better game.

Your also missing the Super Robot Wars series.... which is just unforgiveable in a list of great Strategy RPGs.

Also the Front Mission series.

@ecurbj

lol, "good start for my age"? It's the only SRPG I can get hold of ATM.

Because your such a noob at this genre. NOOB!!!!!!!!!

So are you :P And FE: RD is said to be one of the hardest SRPGs ever :P

 Hah, it depends.

Stella Deus and Hogishami Ruinign Blue Earth are actually a lot harder.  However that game gives you the ability to grind.  Or should I say... the requirement to grind... after every level... a lot.

That design team is ridiculious.

Oh and to decide which SRPG is the best you've got to decide a few things.

Setting

1) I perfer mythical settings

2) I perfer giant robot settings

Customization

1) I like full on out, equip everything customization, where everything can go on everybody!

2) I perfer limited customization, where I can equip weapons on some classes, so no Knights with staffs and no wizards with battle axes.

3) Customization? I don't mind adding in a few things to boost up my characters or pay money to upgrade characters but I want to get to the battles not stare at some screen.

4) Customization? As long as my swordman have weapons that aren't about to break i'm pretty happy aside from some bonus EXP and such.

Gameplay

1) I don't mind replaying battles... a lot.

2) I don't mind grinding fighting random encounters... a lot.

3) I don't mind replaying battles, but I want my expierence and money i've earned to carry over so it's less rough on me.

Deaths

1) Dead is dead. I don't see anybody in real life being brought back to life. Pansies.

2) Dead is dead... if I don't bring the person to life withing 2-3 turns... or have a really obscure spell.

3) Death? Nah, they're just sleeping, they'll be back next battle good as new.

Story

1) This game is serious buisness. Political intrigue, complex storylines.

2) This game is like an anime. Nothing is really serious, it's all for laughes, though we do still have to save the world.

3) So long as there is a lot of text it's a good game, even if the characters are bland, nothing makes sense, and we're just ripping off the next game.

4) Story means all the girls wear clothes where their nipples show right? Even the ones that are wearing armor made of metal.

Oh, and my order of tactics games i've played...

That i remember of course... reserve the right to change my mind as well.

Some of these are imports as well... so they are japanese text only so are basically just graded on playstyle.

1) Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Toghter

2) Front Mission 3

3) Super Robot Wars OG 2

4) Super Robot Wars OG

5) Fire Emblem Path of Radiance (note haven't played the Wii one yet.)

6) Galdius

7) Super Robot Wars J

8) Super Robot wars D

9) Super Robot wars R

10) Fire Emblem... Stones or something, the one that was brought over in english.

11) Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

12) Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis

13) Disgaea 1

14) Shining Force

15) Shining Force 2

16) Disgaea 2

17) Fire Emblem, the one with Roy (Import)

18) Warsong

19) Front Mission 1

20) Onimusha Tactics

21) Front Mission 4

22) Super Robot Wars 3

22) Dynasty Tactics 2

23) Final Fantasy Tactics

24) Dynasty Tactics

25) La Pucelle Tactics

26) Phantom Brave

27) Fire Emblem Gaiden

28) Rebel Star" Tactics Command

29) FEDA

30) Suikoden Tactics

31) Tenchi Muyo! Game-hen (actually ok game... just hate the chars, and is in japanese.)

32) Hosigami Ruining Blue Earth

32) Stella Dues

So yeah. I've played a lot. Sick thing is I feel like i'm missing like... half the games. I'm sure i'll edit more in as i think of em. SRPGs are the one genre i'll import.

Games left off the list for not being SRPG enough.

1) Heroes of Might and Magic games (too much management of other stuff... to me it's more in the tactical war genre. like ROTK and Gemfire.)

2) Ogre Battle games... Real time

3) Bahamut Lagoon... probably should be on the list... Japan only anyway.

4) Advance Wars... no real RPG in it.

5) Ultima Exodus... Kinda an SRPG. Really an RPG with SRPG battles. Actually probably the grandfather of SRPGs as i believe it was made before Fire Emblem NES.

6) Future Tactics: The uprising. More of a turn based FPS. Great game... not enough RPG elements, and the characters and story are lame... but the gameplay itself is cool.

Boy I hope someone acknowledges my huge ass list so it doesn't feel like a waste.

A bit too hardcore.
How many Wii users will be interested in SRPG?

Well, I certainly know that I am, and probably anyone who bought Fire Emblem. I'm a huge SRPG fan, and I think the Wii's userbase is so diverse that there is a niche audience there for that kind of game. The "Wii is a casual console" argument is pretty much dead, at this point, considering how many hardcore gamers own the system amongst the "casual" userbase, as a second or primary console, and judging by the sales of some of the recent "hardcore" games on the system.

SRPG's have a niche audience on all consoles, and will never blow us away with their sales debuts, but honestly, claiming them as a Sony only enterprise is foolish when a majority of them are released on the DS(a nintendo system) anyway.

@zenfoldorVGI,

I agree with most of the thing you said .  I should be more specific when I made my first post.  I meant to say "How many Wii users in Japan will be interested in SRPG?

Let's not forget that SRPG are mostly developed by Japanese developers and they still focus on the Japanese market the most.  In Japan, DS and PSP are the most popular console at this moment.  I think NIS and other SRPG developers will keep making more games for the handhelds.  At the end of this interview, Jack said "Handhelds have great potential for SRPGs, so look forward to see more NIS titles."

I think we will see Disgaea 2 port of the PSP version before the NIS announcing Disgaea port on Wii.

Speaking of disgaea, how do the sales for these games typically go? The VGChartz database has this:

Disgaea 3 0.09m
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (New Edition) 0.03m
Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness 0.09m
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness 0.00m
Disgaea 2 0.15m
Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories 0.00m
Disgaea Portable 0.04m

Obviously not all of those are right (like the 0 sales) but surely they must've done better than that. Anyone got numbers?

Allow me to summarize the lineup of Disgaea:

Disgaea 1 (Hour/Afternoon of Darkness): PS2, PSP, soon DS

Disgaea 2 (Cursed Memories): PS2

Disgaea 3: PS3

Do you guys think I should go and find Disgaea 1/2 for the ps2? I've never played a Disgaea before, but I've heard they're hilarious, and I love the artstyle.

Can you still find Disgaea 1 and 2 for PS2?  Maybe used ones.

Since you don't have DS and PSP, why not wait for Disgaea 3 released for PS3 in NA this summer?

More than PS3/360 owners. Disgaea 3 sold 60k in the first week in Japan and that's called a success.

Soriku,

Let's focus the discussion on "DISGAEA".  Don't get me wrong, I will like to see the Wii version of Disgaea too because it will certainly make this game more popular.

You said there are more Wii owners who like Disgaea than PS3/360 owners.  You may be right, but I believe the most of these potential buyers also own a PS2.  Do you think they will purchase a Disgaea 1 or Disgaea 2 port on Wii while they may have already played them on PS2?

Not to mention Disgaea 1 port on PSP only cost 2800 yen at this moment and DS version is coming out.  Why would they want to wait for the Wii version?

Disgaea 3, on the other hand, will be a better choice to port to Wii because of the limited PS3 userbase at this point.  However, this task may cost a lot more money than we think.

Why did NIS develope Disgaea 3 for PS3 but not Wii at first place?  I honestly don't know, but there must be a reason behind that.

You like Super Robot Wars too!!!???
I am a huge fan too. It's too bad that we will never see these games coming to NA.
Luckily, DS/PSP/PS3 are region free :)

Super Robot Wars is probably one of (if not the best) sRPG series ever made.  I dearly wish the franchise would venture out of Japan more than it has.  OG/OG2 were awesome.
