Forums - Nintendo - Why are Europeans not more supportive for the Wii U?

because while in the 90's in the US they were playing Super Mario we were playing Sonic...

the only real change happened with the PS1 when people switched from SEGA to Playstation due to gran turismo, tekken, final fantasy, metal gear solid, etc

since SEGA called quits, Playstation became synonymous with gaming even for people who don't play videogames at all. if you ask a random person on the street what the wii u was, chances are they wouldn't know. If you tell them it plays games, they'll ask (it's a playstation?)

As everybody says Nintendo was never as big in Europe as in NA. Keep in mind that the presence of gaming companies differs a lot in each country.

For example, apprently Mega Drive sold better in Europe than SNES did. I never realised this living in the Netherlands as old Nintendo games are much more common over here than old SEGA games, and while I know plenty of people who used to own a Nintendo I know know literally no one who had a SEGA. But in the UK for example I believe Mega Drive was more popular. Also, I don't think Nintendo is very popular in eastern Europe and was introduced quite late over there. (plus there are a lot of pc gamers over there)

More important though is the lack of FIFA and big games like CoD and GTA because this is what the masses are interested in. Sony also advertises Playstation very well. Europe loves football, and therefore loves FIFA. Even many players themselves are always going on about how they love playing FIFA on their Playstation. Playstation is advertised during the Champions League which is the most important football (and sports) event in Europe. This way they reach a huge audience including basically all FIFA fans.

That's not how I remember it. I'm from the Netherlands and everyone played Sega and Nintendo in the good old days.

It will differ between countries. I always thought Nintendo was much more popular in the Netherlands. I'm Dutch too and I literally don't know a single person who used to own a Sega, while I know many people who used to have a SNES. I also don't see as much Sega on retro conventions, flea markets etc.

Im Swedish, and im a preatty hardcore nintendo fan, and im 18 and i bought the Wii U at launch, i had it pre-ordered. I did my fair share here xD but anyway hmm UK seems mostly go to playstation, although germany alot of soccer fans go to ps4 and there soccer games. Alot of germans love mario party and mario kart. Sweden is liek the weird one. they just like League of legends, Counter-striker. and those other boring games :P

Well that's better than a country where Fifa is the GOD of videogames, like mine. Some thinks people here buy Ps because variety and all that jazz. Hahaha. Most of Ps players I know play only Fifa and Cod, but they play them on PS because they were used to play PS when they were kids thanks to the popularity of Ps1. There was a long period here where the name "La play" (the ps), was used as synonim of homeconsole even for consoles that were not ps. Just to give you a look of how heavily ps biased this country is xD

Does the Wii U get Fifa?

That answers your question.

This.

And also, Europe has never been very supporting to Nintendo homeconsoles. Even on Nes/Snes era, Sega was actually more popular in a lot of countries. They never conquered this market, then Sony took Sega place as the bad boy of videogames and almost monopolized the market with PS leaving little room for anything else, and that has never really changed until today except for the Wii. Handhelds are another story though.

Well Megadrive did well because it had a lot of games compared to Nintendo's Snes. All of this games did not release in Europe for the Snes:

I hope they will experience the fun, nostalgia and the epicness that comes from some other games, especially Nintendo games Like xenoblade chronicles, Zelda, metroid, splatoon and so on.

I actually bought a WiiU at the beginning of this year specifically because I was craving 3D platformers. I missed my time with the N64, spending countless hours playing mario64, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooi and playing Lylat Wars 64 over and over again.

I played Mario 3D world, I loved it and then I realised there were no other 3D platformers. I dislike the 2D mario's and the constant remastering of them. I came for what I fell in love with in my teens and was left wanting. In the end I ended up trading my WiiU in as even Star Fox seemed miles away and different to what I wanted it to be.

I know I can download some of the 3D Mario games from the Wii, but in the end I want to play my Mario games with a controller and as much as I was dying to play Mario Galaxy, I couldn't bring myself to play a Mario game with motion controls.

Honestly man, you're missing out on one of the great 3D paltformers out there.

OT:

Most of my college-aged Dutch friends have never heard of a Wii U. It really is PlayStation Land over here.

Don't worry the Europeans get more fun games to play than any other console by our tastes.  And I don't just mean fifa and cod.  Rocket league was a monster on Playstation in europe and that's as fun as any other game that's released this year.

We get a ton of indie and digital titles like brothers: a tale of two sons,  journey,  rocket league and a ton more.  These games are similar to the Nintendo type fun and experiences except for far cheaper.  Playstation has it all and Europeans have a great variety of taste.  It's why PC / PS dominates Europe.

OMG, you know absolutely nothing about Nintendo xD I was suspecting that already but now I totally know it.
