Forums - Sales Discussion - November 2015 NPD Thread! Hardware and software in OP!

Looks like Tomb Raider sold less than the reboot on PS4 and Xbox One. This is the most complete and utter failure of the 8th Gen.

Wasn't that just the developer (Crystal Dynamics) saying they were happy with how the game turned out? And they pointed out that their job was just to make the game as good as possible, while sales is a question they'd have to ask MS and SE.

Ahh, thank you for the correction.

I believe you were refering to this article? http://www.vgchartz.com/article/262214/microsoft-and-square-enix-very-happy-with-rise-of-the-tomb-raider/
They said that SE and MS were happy with the game and the dev team, and then responds regarding the issue of the sales.

"I didn't mean to go off topic or patronize, but there was suggestion in the thread that the reported sales numbers reflect poorly on the dev team," he added. "Square/Microsoft are happy with Crystal and Eidos Montreal and the game itself. As to the topic of sales, I'm unqualified to discuss it so I won't have anything else to say on this thread. Much love TRF and happy holidays."

Oh my goodness.  You see no one every said that the game was bad or tried to pin the poor sales on CD.  However, that does not take away from the fact that the sale represent a collosal failure.

What worries me most is the potential monopoly that might emerge... I at least hope that if it comes down to that buyers do something... otherwise, I am calling double standards!

What monopoly? PS consoles dominated for two gens and there was no issue. There were a lot of games and people enjoyed them. Now, there's more ways to play games than ever. Even Phil Spencer said they're going in on another console. Playstation doesn't have the market all to itself. There's really no need to be upset.

Changing topics a little bit: I think it'd be interesting to see both Sony and Microsoft launching new systems without doing something stupid. If that happens in the next-gen, we will see the full potencial of Xbox and PlayStation worldwide at the same time. Some may argue that PS2 is the potential of the PlayStation brand, but I think it can do A LOT more.

If Sony can manage to be not stupid for 2 generations in a row, then it is likely that Sony would take more market share off Xbox even if Xbox totally leanrs its gen 8 lessons. Whoever has the most momentum going into a generation transition has the major advantage, and if they are the leading console for the outgoing generation then it's a double advantage. PS3 was the lowest selling console of last gen, but it had the greatest momentum going in to the 8th gen, even before Wii U launched. Nintendo screwed up with Wii U, MS screwed up with Xb one. And here we are.

Now, assuming Sony doesn't screw up the back half of this generation and it holds the momentum card Sony's position will be immensely stronger than it was at the start of the 8th gen. And while MS's position will be more favourable, the market will still be strongly oriented towards Playstation. MS actually needs to knock PS4 off its stride before the next generation hits in order to make serious inroads into market share for a 9th gen.

I agree, and that's why I think there's very little possibility that taking a considerable hit now would end up not working for the next generation. I see the NECESSITY for Microsoft to lead console sales this generation at least in the US, but UK would be a great addition. They do not need to cut the Xbox One price in other parts of Europe and Asia. Focus on US and UK just to have a good chance to succeed in the next generation. All I don't want is one console (no matter which one) with 80% of market share and with it's company doing whatever they want (I know this is not the case this generation).

I am not saying there was one. I said I am worried that this might become too one sided... or did you forgot what happened the last time a game company became complacent?

Hi all,

Here is a quick chart I made which shows how the PlayStation 4 has led over the Xbox One since launch and how the gap has changed.

Yeah, they tried to do a 24 hour check in on their games. I don't think Sony plans on doing anything of the like.

It's just down YOY for November right? Last I checked they were up YOY in general thanks to the New 3DS launch earlier this year.
