Forums - Website Topics - Let's Talk About Censorship

"Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, politically incorrect or inconvenient as determined by governments, media outlets, authorities or other groups or institutions." (Wikipedia)

It seems to me that they're actually avoiding censorship by saying "you keep breaking the rules in connection with certain topics, so you can stay, as long as you stop getting involved with those topics". In other words, the alternative would be a permaban.

Which would you prefer? A permaban, or a partial ban on certain topics of discussion? I know which one I'd choose.

Guess what - it's not censorship, because the owners/moderators of this site are under no obligation to provide a platform for you to speak. It would be censorship if they used legal force to ban you from talking about something under any circumstance, or removed parts of what you said from an official recording (media), etc.

Kind of like how a movie theatre could have you removed for shouting "PENIS" during a movie, repeatedly. It's not censorship if they come to you and say "you stop shouting that, or you will be removed from the theatre".

Prove to the moderators that you can remain civil - stay away from those topics for the time being, and demonstrate your ability to remain civil. And maybe, just maybe, they'll reconsider the ban, and instead just return you to a regular kind of "stay in the rules" state.

You are right they are under no obligation to confort us, but if they keep this ridiculous rules aand keep making things worst, then people will just  leave and not think this is a safe space.

Your are right that we could just find another site, but some here have grown fond of the community and we rather fix this issue instead of fiding another one and spend a lot of time adjusting.

Were you replying to me? Because I said nothing about comforting(?) anyone, nor about finding another site.

What I said was that it's not censorship, and that the logical thing to do is to follow that rule and get it reversed through proving the ability to stay civil.

Besides which, ethomaz is misrepresenting things. He said it's a rule change. It's not a rule change. It's a mod decision on a specific problem. Ethomaz kept breaking rules. After bans, ethomaz would come back, and break rules again. The mods had three options - allow the cycle to continue unabated, permaban him, or find some way to allow him to remain part of the community without having the problems that he keeps causing. Which of these seem like the best choice, to you?

Oh, that's right. You were banned. Anyway, ethomaz, I've appreciated your posts, but if you get banned rightfully or unjustly, it is what it is. Don't sweat it. I like this site, I like these forums, I like the people here (I think...) But when I get banned, its' like "eh. whatever." When I first signed up, I was averaging like 13 posts a day. Then, my daughter was born, and my post count dropped to 2 posts a day. So no big deal. What I love about this site is there is such a diversity of news, view points, and avenues to other sources of info. But when I get banned, this site is not THAT important to me. Anyway, have fun.

I really dont like this way of thinking. Its how it always starts, something unimporrtant gets hit, and people dont care, then something a little better and so on and so on, by hte time it hits something you really care about or are just willing to fight for, its already the norm and everyone else is doing it. This is why saying a joke about women even in private can get you fired from your job and it could have been avoided if people stud up to feminist at the start of all this. Now you want to roll over to this, on a place wwwhere is suposed to be a safe space of some sort cuz the loosing team is taking it too hard? I say no.

I agree with ethomaz here. This is something that canot go on. If nobody complains they will add more ridiculous little rules that will eventually drive people away and the only fun will be had will be just wwatching the sales chart.

oH, rEALLY...?  Let me tell you what kind of thinking this is.  It's called "PRIORITIZING!"  The primary purpose of this site is information entertainment.  I brought up my daughter in this because what I fight for is her livelyhood.  Coming to VGChartz is NOT going to do that.  If I weren't married and had no kids, I might be averaging 27 posts per day.  But who knows.  The point I'm trying to make here is that there are far more things to "fight" over than a bias for a system of moving electronic parts housed by mold injected plasics.  And assuming that VGChartz is an injust site, leave.  Just leave.  Take your "business" somewhere else, and you can still fight that fight.  In fact, you might be more effective by reaching out to another audience.  VGChartz doesn't hinder me, but I can hinder myself if I forget the plot.  But let's get real here.  this is not about what's right.  It's about ego.  Set yourself aside, and you're see what's ultimately trivia for what it is, TRIVIA.  VGChartz is my default gaming site, but it doesn't run me, and it's not a source of personal validation.

4. Revolution.

Just  kidding, but as he explains it, his last warning or ban was for saying and xbox exclusive flopped, wich almost everyonne on this site has said about forza or tomb raider or sunset overdrive, rise son of rome and son on. Is he then getting marked? Cuz I get the rule on trolling, it is anoying, but we are on a slaes site, saying games floped should in no way be considered trolling a a sales site, its what its all about. So aside from your 3 options, I say that the mod team went a little to far.

You at no point countered what I said. You are efectivly doing what I pointed out, rollling over cuz you just dont care about this, but when it hits something you do care about, like if in school your daughter is being censored and gets a suspention by saying ponys are better than barby and the other girl cryed, youll say its ridiculous, but by then it might be the norm that nobody can get upset over anything and the ofender will be harshly punished.

And yes, I know what I said sounds a little crazzy and extreme, but its a scenario that I thought would affect you even if its nowhere near or ever likly to happen.

And its not about fighting for a console, its about censorship, it could be the most ridicoulus fighting ever, like the best candy or boobs vs asses, but there should never be a censorship about anything, no matter how much it offends or hurts the oposing side.

So aside from your 3 options, I say that the mod team went a little to far.

I don't know the specifics of that case (I speak from experience with moderating a different site, a few years ago), but it's worth remembering that the same sentence can be trolling or not, depending on context. Describing a game as flopping in the context of discussing games that flopped would be fine. Describing a game as flopping in a discussion of games that the poster found entertaining would be a clear example of trolling - "you know that game you just said you really liked? Well, it sold really badly". It's all about the context.

And I could be mistaken, but based on ethomaz's copy/paste of the mod message, it sounds like he's been told not to post negatively about Xbox before (which would explain why they had to specifically say "even if done respectfully"). This is just a further extension of the rule.

I've seen ethomaz's posting habits before, which says something, because I don't spend much time in the Xbox forums, and I'm not all that active a member, overall. I can entirely believe that the mod team were tempted to go further, and just permaban. In my view, he got off lightly.

Because you misunderstood my intent and took things out of context.  So there was NO point in countering something that wasn't the case.  Therefore using YOUR logic, you never countered what I orginally posted because your argument didn't apply to the original message in which I clarified later.  You threw the first stone at the wrong house.  Say sorry, and I'll forgive you.

I say this with no disrespect but your also a user on Visioneck yes? and the conmunity you largely associate with, that being Sony/PlayStation seems to have a prominent presence there. So why do you chose to continue to use VGC and risk getting banned all the time?

VizionEck community is multiplatform... the game itself ended being PS exclusive.

It is more about legacy when VGC was a nice place with good discussions happening about what matter... I'm a 2007 user and I can say I saw a lot here.

Seems like they are trying to corner you off like you are the KKK. Just need to put up some police barricades and some angry protesters before you start your speech.

Ethomaz left out the message he got from Mods which said that after he came back from a ban warning him not to post in Xbox related topics or to create them that he made 19 posts, if I remember correctly 16 of them were in Xbox topics about how as he puts it various things flopped or were bad.

The thing is, a forum is here mostly to talk about news, to give your opinion on something and to talk about that which you like, if 84.2% of what you add to the forums is the message "I dislike the Xbox and I like when games for it fail" then well... there isn't much being added to VGchartz as a whole in my opinion.

I mean to just post in a topic about a games sales, and point out "X number is low" is it needed? does it add anything? is there the thought that there could be people in the thread talking who missed the number the game sold or are unaware as to its Flopped/Unflopped status? I really doubt there are those members on the forum who rely on "Flopza" "Failo" "fails of War" "Flopset overflop" "Failble - The Journey" and so on type of comments to let them know what the sales figures mean exist on here.

Is it really that hard to just be asked to stop making negative posts? To just create threads about games you like and the systems you enjoy, make threads about how good the games on those sold or informing the people on the forums about things like how good a game is they might have missed or that a sale on the games of the store you like is happening so more people can enjoy those games.

I really don't get why any of this needs to be pointed out to you.

tl:dr - what is happening to you isn't censorship, negative posts are just white noise to me, if someone was just posting white noise, as a moderater I'd probably tune that noise out as well tbh, and as a user I'm grateful they do that job.
