I have no doubt some Wii owners went to PS4. But the kind of games that attracted these people to Wii are now on mobile for 99c, that's logically where they would have moved to, since they obviously did not transition to Wii U, and PS4 does not really offer those kind of games.

Thou art certain ?

There's another option to consider and it's that they may have quit their digital gaming hobbies altogether!

Some would have.

In either case, making another console aimed at recapturing the Blue Ocean would be a fool's errand in today's market.

I'm not convinced that attacking head on against Microsoft/Sony is a good idea either since it is the most riskiest of venture when it comes to returns/spending ...

Nintendo wouldn't be in this mess by now had they given the WII's final years the same treatment Sony did for their PS3 ...

That's what I was talking about, targets are not mutually exclusive. The Wii target was not only core nintendo fans and the "blue ocean" also a lot of Ps3 and X360 bought a Wii during its lifetime, also you have to consider generations: a lot of Wii users were kids who played on consoles for the first time - and this is not only my opinion, Sony was aware of that http://ps4daily.com/2014/07/sony-aims-to-win-over-some-wii-owners-with-playstation-4/ .

The same way the actual F2P crowd is not only the Wii's "blue ocean". It's a group of different mainstream and non gamers, with different tastes and preferences playing F2P for a specific purpose, as a very brief diversion on the go.

So you think Nintendo would be better off chasing the F2P crowd than today's mainstream console gamer?

No, sorry I know we've been discussing for long, I know I may not be very clear. What I meant earlier is they should try be different and trasversal to Sony and MS. They should create a gaming offering with a different purpose from existing consoles thus looking for a target that is trasversal from PC gamers, Console gamers, former handheld gamers and f2p players.

I may have been unclear myself, I wasn't saying they have to become a mirror imnage of Sony/Microsoft, just that they cannot afford to leave the lion's share of today's audience, the people who buy Uncharted, GTA, etc, completely untapped. I'm saying they need to diversify their appeal to a wider audience.

Thanks for getting us back on track, it's really my fault we got so off it to begin with.

Yes, we need more footage. It's ridiculous that the year it was supposed to come out saw a mere 13 seconds of footage. Totally unacceptable.

I'm actually enjoying the discussion. It's good to see that other people share my most simplistic mainstream casual pov.

Like already wrote, they need more mature games, new projects and third party exlusives, they done great job with Bayonetta 2, Fatal Frame V, Xenoblade X, even with Devils Third despite game is garbage, but we need much more of that, we also need something new, Retro needs to make something similar to Uncharted or TLoU, we need new Metroid Prime, some exclusive Resident Evil would be great again...we need all that, but Nintendo don't need to change in any way already great games that are still on of the best games in industry and that are still very popular with great sales. Also they need third party support, but they realised that itself because they saw they cant support one console itself.

See now we're on the same wavelength. I completely agree with the bolded.

Yes, do something completely different and new IP that is more mature, but I dont think that need to be clone of those games, something similar yes but definitely with Nintendo touch that will make huge difference. :)  Do that, but relly don't need to change in any way (of course except changes they are doing normally with every new game of some IP) already great IPs.

Oh please, no. This is the last thing they should do. Nintendo needs to offer a game experience that is different from their competitors. I welcome new IPs or reboots but the day they start to mimick other 1st party studios and look for what is trending at the moment -like any other 3rd party company-  is the day they really have no more reason to exist as a console maker.

Of Course, they need to continue what they doing best, but they also need some new and more mature IP beside Metroid Prime, and that's my point. Of Course we are talking about Nintendo here, they will definitely not start making copies of other IPs but something similar and yet again very different (with Nintendo touch that will make huge difrence), definitely.
