Forums - Nintendo - Xenoblade Chronicles X Tech Analysis (Digital Foundry)

But as with everything, the flaws only serve to show what the future holds. The fact that it has a stable framerate, and actually works with what it does accomplish graphically makes me far more excited about the NX Xenoblade than whatever Assassin's Creed they announce for the PS5 Xbox 2 (or whatever half assed open world game title you could insert in here). Tech will get better (it always does), it's seeing how a company works with the tech they have that shows a studios talent. Monolith Soft is an exceptional development studio.

I wouldn't even call them exceptional. But they have their priorities in check. I've always said this and I'll reiterate it for good measure - the only reasons I accept 30fps without complaint is when a developer is attempting something so ambitious from a gameplay perspective that it would be nearly impossible to accomplish at 60fps without severely detremental impact on some other aspect of the game.

XCX is one such example, and they handled themselves marvelously. Bravo.

I said rpg though

Clearly I'm illiterate. I'm sorry. You are correct.

So this is the open world rpg with the best best performance this gen? It barely gets down to 29fps anywhere except on the opening scene on Planet Mirra.

MGSV says hi at 60fps. Not even remotely close.

I came here to praise the game, but you just couldn't let me do that.

Can you run from your HQ to the mission area? Is it seemless with almost no loading screens for the entire world? Can you leave your mission area in MGS V? Let's not pretend there aren't massive sacrifices in that game as well.

Very nice. :)

Also:

"Seeing what has been achieved here gives us hope for the upcoming Zelda title on Wii U. Earlier this year, Monolith Soft posted a number of jobs for support roles which was later clarified by the game's creator Tetsuya Takahashi in an interview noting that "Monolith is currently supporting a handful of other Nintendo projects, specifically projects needing map design and 'interesting adventure elements'." Bearing in mind that Monolith Soft previous helped with The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, it seems likely that the latest Wii U instalment is receiving support as well. While the team responsible for Xenoblade X is separate from the support team, the experience gained in the creation of the game certainly seems like a good fit for an open world Zelda title."

Good to hear the framerate is stable and that pop-ins aren't that noticeable outside of NLA.

MGSV is not a seamless open world it's a set of large select areas which are nowhere near the size of what other open world games have and each area is mission centric, the is also far less going on in these areas then open world games, I know having played through the game.

Including XCX i can only actually think of 3 8th gen titles that would fall under that specific umbrella (4 if you include Bloodborne, though i personally wouldn't). Of those 3 though, yes, it's the most stable.

You are not counting DAI ;)

Exactly, apples and oranges and not a very good comparison.

I assumed you were talking about 8th gen specific titles. Including DA:I, XCX would be joint with the X1 version of that (below it if we include the scenic shot, but i don't think drops like that are particularly relevant so i'd still consider it a tie).
