Forums - Nintendo - I wanna get into Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, is Super a good place to start?

As the title says, I've been semi-interested in this series, obviously being that I'm pretty into Pokemon, but have never actually played any of the games, due to procrastination, lots of it. Well it's time I put a stop to that now! I was originally gonna jump straight into Super (what a creative name!) what with it just releasing today and all, but there's been quite a few games in the series already. Would I be missing anything? I doubt there's an overarching story with you playing as a different character every game but I barely know anything about the series. I've heard Gates to Infinity is essentialy the Sticker Star of the series so I'll be staying away from that one for sure. :L

If I remember correctly there is some returning characters in the series coming back. I recommend you play sky first if you want to get into the series quickly. It's the second in the series so it overcomes the problems it had in the first, but I would recommend you play the series in order to understand all the references. But if you just want to get into the series straight away the by Super and play the other games later.

Well, Super hasn't been released yet, but I think it would be fine

The story isn't that good to begin with, so I don't think you really will be missing out if you start there

I only played the Darkness + Sky (DS) and Red/Blue rescue team (GBA) so maybe my opinion isn't that reliable though :p

Platina says the story isn't good anyway tho, which btw seems really bad considering there's no multiplayer like in the main series.

It's out in the U.S. atleast, but I'ma wait and see if it's part of the eshop sale.

Is the story really no good? The concept of no humans and talking Pokemon seems really interesting to me. :O

That's basically all the games lol.

I personally didn't find the story that interesting, but it was good enough for me to beat the game.

You have amnesia and turn into a pokemon and things happen from there.. if that interests you, then it should be good :p

However, I only speak for myself, because I'm sure others would enjoy the story... there is a manga for the original mystery dungeon, so you could read it to see if like the story, though I can't find it online..

The stories don't seem to connect, so it doesn't really matter where to start. But yeah, just don't play Gates to Infinity because it's garbage. I think Explorer's of Sky is the best one, so it might be better to start there just because it's cheaper, but I haven't gotten to this game, since it only came out today, so idk the quality of this one.

First of all I tell you where NOT to start: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is just bad, I played the Demo and got bored, after that I watched the entire gameplay and I got even more disappointed, the game is short, too easy and lacks of a good plot that is one of the most immersive points in the game, at least for the games I played (Explorers of Time/Sky). I can't really give a proper opinion since I never got my hads on Red Team and Blue Team but the previously mentioned ones for the DS are some of the best Spin-off games I've ever played (keep in mind the person who's talking to you is a Pokémon fan so it might be very different for you ). From what I read Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon introduces the Mega Evolution (somehow since there are no humans in the MD world and to activate this process you usually need a human, a pokémon, a megaring, a megastone and a bond between the first two) so it might be better to chose one of the older games first so that you get introduced to the MD mechanics/items and then you go ahead with even more mechanics as well as preventing any form of eventual spoiler from the newest titles regarding the old ones

Maybe, Sky Explorers is great you can also start there

Much Sky love, and not just here it seems lel. Seems like the main advantage you'd think Sky would have being price is not so much the case. I don't doubt that Sky would be a good place to start, but I do like Super with it's superior visuals, presumably better sound, and having all Pokemon in it. I should maybe wait til reviews are out.
