#9: Super Mario 64
Platform
1996
As revolutionary as the game was back in 1996, even more impressive is how timeless this game is. Even today, almost 20 years later, it remains one of the greatest examples of 3D movement in gaming. Everything is incredibly responsive and tight, and the game is a true joy to play all these years later. Not only that, but the game is incredibly inventive, intuitive, and captivating to the highest degree. Each level offers something unique, whether it be an unforgettable musical score, uncovering secrets, or throwing baby penguins into the great void. Super Mario 64 is a classic, but more than that, it's a game that transcends gaming generations and shows just how important the foundations of game creation are.
