Forums - Nintendo - Why hasn't there been more hype for one of Japan's largest games of the past five years?

I got Yo-Kai the other day and love it! :3 only problem I have is how they deal with evolutions...

This is just my opinion, but:

Unlike Pokemon, which launched with a traditional, but strategic turn-based RPG battle system (which has expanded with a lot of hidden depth over the years), Yokai Watch's battle system is passive and not particularly fun. That's a core gameplay element, so for it to be so hands-off is problematic.

Along with that, most of the Yokai seem to be based on Japanese spirits and folklore, and Eastern sensibilities, or are just plain weird (Cheeksqueak? Really? An old lady you can "battle"? Smh) which don't translate well here and are honestly just largely unappealing. Compare that to Pokemon, where the three Gen 1 starters and the mascot are all very animalistic: a dinosaur with a plant on its back, a fire-lizard, a water-turtle, and an electric-mouse. Animals are universal among cultures, and were easily translated from Japan to the West. The starters and Pikachu are "color-coded" with their elemental typing, which is also easily understood. Plus, they're all cute. And then when they evolve...they're cool.

Don't get me wrong. I think Yokai Watch is interesting and has a lot of potential, and it's obviously been a HUGE hit in Japan. I just think it might be a little TOO Japanese in its design/style to fully appeal to Western audiences as much as Pokemon has.

Upcoming Games To Get

Definite: Kirby Star Allies (Switch), Mario Tennis Aces (Switch), Fire Emblem (Switch), Yoshi (Switch), Pokemon (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4)

Considering: Fe (Switch), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch), The World Ends With You (Switch), Ys VIII (Switch), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (PS4), Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Remix (PS4), The Last Guardian (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS4), Anthem (PS4), Shenmue 3 (PS4), WiLD (PS4)

Has it already been released in the US? How did it sell?

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Come join The 2018 Obscure Game Monthly Review Thread.

Doesn't appeal to Western audiences as much, I guess.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Because we're not in Japan. :L

lol this.

That's like asking Japan why there hasn't been more hype for Halo as it's been one of the largest game of like the past decade lol xD

Why?

because the people need Ni No Kuni 2. (for PS4 or 3DS or something) ^^

the JRPG Ni No Kuni (PS3, Level 5) was awesome and looks so amazing. The best Level 5-Game in the last years.

Yokai Watch is..well.. "okay" - this is no big "level5-game" for the people, i think. And i have no interest.

Oh God yes!!! Forget Yo-kai Watch and give us Ni No Kuni 2!!!!!!! T__T
