My PS2 has been the most reliable dvd player I've had. Picture quality is fine. As for user comfort I would say its good, but not great.
Manchester United 2008-09 Season - Trophies & Records
The PS2 can't upscale. Also, many dvd players like the Philips will play divx files off of both disk and usb memory sticks.
Using a controller as a remote sucks hard. It is no where near as good as a regular DVD player because it is so annoying to use the controller as a remote.
If you're not oging to pick up a remote for the PS2, I wouldn't reccommend the Dualshock, it seems sluggish for going through DVD menus.
Of course, if DVD playing is second to gaming, the PS2 is a great choice with hundreds of top quality games... and thousands of shit ones, 'n' all.
You options for playing DVDs- don't know what Euro costs are
Xbox- likely $50 used has HD but is a poor DVD player and no remote
360- 200 euros, good DVD player and upscaler but no HD
Cheap DVD player- $25 better than Xbox but not amazing
Good DVD player- $40
Upscaler- $80 plays DVDs upscaled
Used PS2- around $50 but may want to buy remote
PS2- $130 but may want remote
PS3- $399 players DVDs upscaled and Blu-ray with HD
Portable DVD player- $80 or more, comes with tiny screen but can be hooked up to any TV

I use it all the time as a DVD player , plus it has tons of games , so you should go for it :)

if you're just going to play movies, you might as well get a cheap DVD player. Getting a remote for the PS2 is almost as much as a stand-alone DVD player itself.
Here in America, you can get DVD players for around 20 dollars. If you want to play PS2 Games AND watch DVDs, then go ahead and get a PS2. If just DVD's, there are cheaper, better options than PS2.

QFE
I only used my PS2 as a movie player when my parents were watching a movie and I wanted to watch a different movie and I had nothing else to use.
If you want to play 4-5 games on it, then I think it is worth it, but else I'd just get a cheap DVD player.
