Forums - Sales Discussion - Prediction: Consoles will be getting a lot bigger in Europe than PC and Mobile in this generation

If the PC falters. That would spell bad news for consoles.

Who the hell do you think funds the R&D for high-end graphics cards that goes into your consoles? ;)
PC isn't going anywhere, that "death song" has been singing for decades.

Also hilarious how the Op claims that a Geforce 970 is hardly an improvement over the PS4 because of the Witcher 3...
But fails to take notice that the PC version is running at higher framerates, better textures, better lighting, better filtering, better anti-aliasing, better shadowing... And more. Yes. Hardly an improvement at all. HARDLY AT ALL.

The amount of horse power needed to double your framerates is a significant one for a game like Witcher 3.

Not to mention the drivers used in those benchmarks are simply archaic, there have been a ton of free performance improvements since then for that game.

But you know, cherry picking and all.

No I don't think that's going to happen this gen or the next to be honest.

I know you dislike PC a lot but it's been here for decades and it;s here to stay for years to come. Others have claimed countless times that it's dying or that it will vanish completely and yet it's been growing a lot over the years to a point where it's outgrown consoles completely in terms of userbase and global revenue, Tablets have also outgrown consoles in terms of both. I just flat out don't see consoles surpassing both this gen or the next.

He's talking about Europe, not China.

Nopes. Console gaming can exist without PC gaming but the reverse is not true.

I'm not talking about China though, that is of course unless you are next going to imply I was and drag it on for 1-2 pages. If so I'm not really up for that since it goes nowhere.

Not really, PC gaming can exist fully without console gaming but consoles can actually never exist without the PC since computers are what make console games since the very beginning, consoles too and yes PC's are used for gaming a lot these days so yes the PC is the platform that does actually make your games.

Keep dreaming mate. ;)

Games are made on a PC as consoles aren't fast or flexible enough to handle Gigabytes worth of datasets such as textures, general art, sound bytes, compiling, cats. etc'.
Consoles also don't have the technology support to build those assets, such as graphics tablets, 5k/8k professional multiple monitors, lazer scanners to scan real-life objects, you name it.

Hardware is made primarily for the PC, filtered down to consoles. GPU's, Ram, CPU's, Storage. The lot. - Unless you want a Mobile/Cell Phone ARM SoC for the Playstation 5? If so. Go buy the Ouya.

It used to be financially feasible to build your own microprocessors, but as processors, be it CPU or GPU... Have gotten orders of magnitude more complex as transister counts have exploded... Due to our needs for more speed and flexibility... So have their costs of designing and fabricating them.
It wouldn't be feasible to build a 10~ Billion transister SoC for the next generation consoles, not from scratch, hence why console manufacturers have been leaning more and more heavily on the PC space for technology improvements. - It's on the cutting edge, always.

"meanwhile looking at the PC side a GTX 970 costs now as much, or more than a PS4 console itself and it gives you not that much more performance as a PS4"

You should have opened with this so I could simply laugh and walk away

If you're playing Chinese MMOs then sure, PC gaming can survive without console. Wherever their roots were doesn't change the fact that the PC gaming industry can go away and consoles will still be alive. In the west, consoles sales subsidize PC games sales.

Umm. What? Again, you can't be serious.  lol

Pretty sure the PC is the more profitable singular platform for publishers/developers... There are profit margins of 70% on PC, where-as consoles it's more like 30% last time I checked.

Many PC games sell better on PC than consoles. Case in point: Diablo 3.

Plus... Kickstarter kinda' makes your point completely and utterly irrellevant. Case in point: Star Citizen.
PC has more games, has more exclusives, has more gamers.
Even it's exclusives are some of the most expensive platform exclusive games produced of all time. Case in point: Starwars the old republic.

Not sure where you got 70% from. Care to provide a link? And even then, a game has to sell multiple times over to make up what they would get on consoles. Here's an example:

http://www.seaven-studio.com/ethan-meteor-hunter-the-loosy-indie-platformer-who-sold-100-000-units/

PS3 sales: 4 050 units

PSV sales: 2 763 units

PC sales: 105 754 units

Revenue:

PC 57%

PS3 26%

Vita 17%

Many PC games sell better on PC than consoles and you list Diablo 3? You're telling me that a series that originated on PC and that got released 16 months earlier on PC than on consoles sold more on PC? Shocker.

As for Star Citizen (has it been released yet?), it's obviously an exception rather than the rule. How many games have got that much support on kickstarter?

Yes, I'm sure PC has more games, exclusives and gamers but then again, there's what 1.4B people in China so there is a big market there.

And your last point about most expensive exclusives... not sure what that's about.
