"The PlayStation 4 console has now sold “well over 25 million” units worldwide according to Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny.
“I don’t think there’s a better time to buy into PlayStation – PS4 particularly,” Denny said to GamesIndustry.biz at Paris Games Week. “Our installed base now is well over 25 million. That gives us a massive community of gamers, supported by a lot of new community features. We’ve got great games out there, more coming through. We’re looking forward to 2016, it’s an exciting time."
This refers to install base so it's sold through not shipped.
What are the implications for VGC data? As at 3 October we have it at 26.5 million. It may be that this quote is based on Sept Quarter data not up to the minute data. If that's the case VGC are probably not far wrong. If the data is up to the minute, which I doubt, then VGC might be somewhat over, considering once VGC publishes hardware up to 24 Oct it should be over 27 million. Over 27 million is probably a bit too far over 25 million for Sony to reference 25 million as a bench mark.
In terms of what sounds impressive and at the same time giving a roung guide as to sales total "Well over 25 million suggests anything from 25.5 million up to 26.7 million. Over 26.7 million I would think you are more inclined to say "almost 27 million". Much over 28.5 million and you're into the "almost 30 million" territory.
It could also mean they know when they crossed 25 million, but that was a little while ago so the 25 million mark is relatively old data and thus at the typical rate of sales they are noe well above that, but without a very precise figure available.
It's an untypically vague sales figure coming from Sony. They've normally been more precise than that this generation.
