"Is it possible to get a sense of how big this community (buzz around a game) is and how much it effects a games sales and advertising budget?"
Trends on instragram would probably do? Youtube views? google searches of game names?
compaired to sales, and their advertiseing budget.
There is probably some semi sane way to make sense of it, and do what you discribe.
"Fallout 4 is something that comes to mind and I'm sure bethesda are saving truck loads on the advertising budget for this game as its simply advertising itself but can we get stats on this? A way to see the numbers instead of relying on percieved hype?"
I rather like their s.p.e.c.i.a.l youtube videos :)
How much does something like that cost? no idea, but gameing media sites love to post those because their also funny & informative, so its basically free advertisement via gameing sites. All it takes is them uploading a youtube video.
There have been actual ads as well... but yeah I dont think fallout 4 is breaking the bank by running ads.
The brand for fallout, and pip boy, are pretty strong. They dont really need much to get people to buy fallout.
Those tiny special videos, are a smart way of getting cheap advertisement.
Sorry I cant be of any help, there must be a marketing guy or analyst on this site that can help though.
