I think there is absolutely good reason to cut the price. The fact that Xbox One and WiiU haven't been as successful as the $399 PS4 doesn't mean that it's a good idea to ride launch MSRP too far. Losing momentum and failing to greatly expand the sales base (as well as ceding a certain % of customers to the cheaper X1, a number impossible to quantify fully, but also impossible to completely deny) are not things worth risking.

$349 reinvigorates the PS4's momentum, and sales should be higher by enough of a % vs. staying at $399 that the difference in the initial console sales revenue would more than be made up for in PSN, Game, and Accessory sales within the first year.

It's not always about merely beating competitors, it's much more important to have a successful product for the long term.

If a $349 PS4 is more profitable over the next year than a $399 PS4 (quantifying the deeper sales that each PS4 in the wild generates) due to higher sales trajectory, then that makes perfect sense.

At 400$ it is outselling the competion by a vast margin. Safe the price cut until they really need it....

The PS4 WILL NOT get an official price drop this year. There will be quite a few retailer deals to be had though

Halo fever isn't as crazy in europe as it is in USA (and UK), it won't affect MS or Sony

No press conference would have been set earlier.

What sony hopes with the press conference is that while xbox owners plays halo 55. Ps owners won't think about that because of the new announcements.

$100 for 500gb
$50 for 1tb

$50 and i'm pretty sure it will happen prior to PGW since leaks are already happening.

http://ps4daily.com/2015/10/it-begins-target-is-the-first-retailer-to-offer-ps4-at-350/

i saw the ps4 at $375 this weekend too. price cut is happening and soon.

the fact that PGW is the same week as halo 5 is certainly interesting. i think sony picked PGW over gamescom because of that. i expect at least one notable announcement there aimed at stealing the press from ms/halo.

Verendus rumours are speaking of 3 more notable Sony first party announcements this year (the first notable announcements being TLG, Horizon, Dreams and Gravity Rush 2) and that is excluding QD.

So QD should be at PGW and I think it's unlikely that PSX will have 3 big first party games announced, so I think we're looking at at least 2 notable announcements out of PGW.

if it's 3 announcements not including QD then it might be like:

QD + 1 at PGW

last 2 at PSX

but that's just a rumor,.. although i don't expect sony to hold any conference without at least 1 announcement.

however, imo, sony needs to announce their VR lineup soon if psvr is launching before E3 next year (first half 2016).   so far we got rigs but they have to have something better than that if they want psvr not to flop.  point being,. i expect at least one notable psvr announcement still this year probably at psx.

If Sony wants PSvr to not flop, they need do one of two things IMO.

1. Sell all you need for VR under $200

2. Make it compatible with PCs if its going to be over $200

or both.

So to sum up, it's at this time of year because it's more tactical to announce a price cut. And I like the idea of $50 for the 1TB and $100 for the 500GB, until they run out... But I was also thinking of a value in £ or €, not dollars :P

Buying order: Switch, better pc

The date of the Paris Game Week is not decided by Sony. The reason for missing the Gamescom according to a Sony rep was:

"A Sony spokesperson has told IGN the decision was made due to the proximity of E3 and Gamescom, before emphasising a more meaningful event could be held during October's Paris Games Week."

"We're delighted to announce that we will be hosting an international media briefing at Paris Games Week on 27th October," they said. "With the changes this year of E3 taking place a week later and Gamescom taking place earlier, we feel that both PlayStation and the wider industry would benefit from a major news milestone later in the year, during the most important period for gaming."

It makes sense. Microsoft already blew their load this year, and Nintendo is MIA when it comes to conferences since some time ago.

That's really just an excuse imo, the conference was pushed back for purely strategical reasons

Actually... that is what the sony guy is saying. one does not even have to read between the lines.

during the most important period for gaming

Hunting Season is done...

The date of the Paris event was decided way before the Halo launch date and that is not by Sony.

Thats what i said.

But the date couldnt be better placed. If bombs are dropped on the PGW it will steal Xbox momentum on the holiday season, which is noice.

If they drop the price (which is not likely) my guess is $50 at most. Sony seem content to make money given current strong sales.
