I wish developers could make games in either 2D or 3D depending on the genre of the game. This would be a lot better than making games all in 3D.

Like most here have said it depends on the game. Zelda is 100% based purely on the games level design's so it entirely rests on that. I think to many 3d games rely on their graphics instead of storytelling, but there are great 3d games and there were tons of great 2d games.

Ummmm.... first-person shooters?
Suikoden 2Ds was also a lot better than Suikoden 3-Ds.
MGS improved in 3D.

Were there ever 2D FPS games? The closest I can think of is Wolfenstein 3D which didn't have a Z axis.

Metroid 2D = Platformer/action game.
Metroid 3D = FPS with platforming elements.
Totally different game genres.

And Doom. Heck, even the NES had some first-person action going, though not shooters.

The old Wizardry games and the like don't count. Didn't the original Doom have jumping or was it simply run & gun?
Rockman X8 was awesome, killed that X7 beeatch.
Some games should just stick to 2d
