Forums - Sony - Sony responds to Michael Pachter’s Prediction on This Being Last Real Console Cycle

- Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida responded to a question about the death of console gaming as is being *predicted by Michael Patcher during a livestreamed panel from EGX in Birmingham, he said:

“Michael is fun to listen to, right? (laughs)

[…]

We look at all of these analyst reports, and every year, from the same company, the forecast changes hugely, because of the things that happen in the year before. They change their prediction dramatically.

I don’t, you know, mind hearing something like that, because it’s so interesting… Consoles were announced dead for the longest time. Even at the time when PlayStation One was being worked on, some analyst said that PC games would dominate in the future and there would be no place for home consoles.

Every time these things are proven wrong, and as long as we have passionate people wanting to continue to play on game consoles, we wll try hard to continue, and even make it bigger for the future.”

- *Michael Patcher said next generation would be half as big as the current one though, not that consoles would outright die and that console gaming should not require a console...

- Yoshida also talked about PlayStation remastered and how Sony is selectively picking PS3 games to remastered as allegedly about half of those who own a PS4 did not own a PS3

- when asked about what Sony Bend is doing he teased that they “exists, and they are making some awesome cool game.”

Got Doom?

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

Shuhei laying the smackdown.

He is right... Patcher is fun to hear... and always changing his prediction for every time he is wrong so he ends up even more wrong.

duduspace11 "Well, since we are estimating costs, Pokemon Red/Blue did cost Nintendo about $50m to make back in 1996"

Mr Puggsly: "Hehe, I said good profit. You said big profit. Frankly, not losing money is what I meant by good. Don't get hung up on semantics"

Azzanation: "PS5 wouldn't sold out at launch without scalpers."

Patcher is entertaining, that's about it. I don't know where he comes up with his statements from, but somebody off of the street, with no game knowhow, could do better predictions than he does.

I think Shu is being willfully ignorant to what Pachter really meant, because it wasn't some "downfall of consoles" declaration he's making it out to be. It's an evolution, and that will happen.

patcher said the console market would be smaller right?

and he is correct. you dont need to be a scientist to realise that PS3+360+ Wii > PS4+ X1 + WiiU

He predicts PS4 130M X1 110M and WiiU 35M = 275M

This gen PS3 85M X1 85M Wii 100M = 270M

So it isn't half the previous gen in his prediction;

This is one case when Pachter is right. The dedicated console market will shrink but we will instead see the emergence of new ways to play through things like PSHome where the physical console becomes secondary.

Analysts also predict a fall in iPhone sales and Apple's doom every year, and then every iPhone sells more than any iPhone that came before and Apple gets richer. I can't understand how these analysts keep their jobs.

Because people learnt that they only need to invert and them they get close to 100%
