Forums - Gaming - Was the original Xbox the best Microsoft console?

360 was the only Xbox I owned but I never got to finish Viva Pinata (this was actually fun) or get my hands on Alan Wake or Blue Dragon!! Played some of Halo: Reach's campaign & it was alright (didn't have Live atm) but nothing else really interested me. Blinx put the OG Xbox on my radar though. Still I gotta say the 360 is the best MS console so far.

Shenmue 2 is not a role playing game its a action adveture game.

From your very link:

Genre(s) Open world (Sandbox)
Action-adventure
Role-playing video game

OH WELL.

To be fair the term RPG is often a misnomer as it is incorrectly applied to games in which you are effectively given no control over the direction of the plot, character development or approach to any given situation. My experience with Shenmue would lead me to believe that it is not an actual role playing game as you don't really play much of a role in the sequence of events or final outcome (outside of failure).

No. The 360 by far.

That's a weak argument considering Sega themselves refer to it as a role playing game in the Prima official strategy guide, and prior to the game being pushed to Sega's new platform, the project was often stated by Sega to the press as being a "Virtua Fighter RPG".

They built it as one, the guide reffers to it as one, and wikipedia covers both 1 and 2 as being within the RPG genre, too.

Pretty conclusive to me.

Japanese developers misuse the term role playing game all of the time and a many JRPGs are ironically named (especially the classics). Chris Hu while not technically correct was right when you consider the fact that you don't actually play a role in the events of Shenmue and it wouldn't actually fit the original definition of role playing. If my DM captured the Shenmue experience as a pen n paper RPG I'd have to be honest and tell him that it was the flimsiest example of role playing outside of early JRPGs. Semantics, the spirit of the law and other non-sequiturs I suppose. I enjoyed Shenmue by the way, the battle with the massive gang was an amazing experience as was the fight with that damn ninja.

On topic: I really loved MechAssault, KotOR, Jet Set Radio, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, Crimson Skies and Psychonauts. They were absolute essentials as far as I am concerned and they really seperated the system from the competition (although I still prefer my PS2).

Yeah its at the bottom of the list there are a ton of games that have RPG elements that aren't RPG's.  Heck with the mod cards even Forza 6 has RPG elements.

I usually hear people say that the Xb360 was better.
The original Xbox had a much more diverse library compared to both the 360 and Xb1 though.

Not really since it had zero JRPG's plus some of the best games on the original Xbox made it to the 360.  Plus the overall library of the 360 is like over 10X the library of the original Xbox if you include all the indie and XBL arcade games so there is pretty much no way it had a more diverse library.

Does Jade Empire count as a JRPG? I have no idea but it was a great game.

OG Xbox sure was a beast with some of the best games I've played including Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, Dreamfall: Longest Journey, Max Payne 1-2, Still Life 2, Fable, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath etc, but I think Xbox consoles have only been getting better so it's X1 --> 360 --> OG.

Since Gears UE, X1 is the most complete experience any console has to offer for me :)

So what so awesome about the 360? can you and others please explain more instead just claiming it is?

I guess you never owned a 360.  I'm pretty sure that everyone that owned a 360 and a original X Box like me prefers the 360.  The only edge the original Xbox has over the 360 that the hardware is more reliable but that pretty much changed with the release of the 360 S in 2010 which is just as reliable as the original Xbox.

I am not a hardcore xboxfan but i owned both consoles equally a short period of time to be not blinded by nostalgia. And from both consoles i decided at some point to get the first xbox back.

Because it actually has more exclusives than the 360 in my taste.

uhhh maybe the games in general? XBL? Achievements? XBLA?

Why should he have to even explain, 360 has a bigger and arguably better library. It's no surprise on why people think the 360 is better, why are you so shocked?

OG xbox had XBLive and Xbox Live arcade and supported patches and dlc as well like with star wars battlefront. The 360 has more games but most of them are multiplats.

You have to look at the timeframe, the OG xbox was way more powerfull and innovative for its time than the 360 was. and if we talk about the library we have to view it more like PS3/360 vs PS2/Xbox. Most of the important games from that generation got the first xbox.
