Forums - Sony - Sony MMO will beat WOW success

I don't think Sony will beat my success.

Anywho, this sadly is a very slanted thread.  Many people may not recognize who SOE is or remember that they were responsible for the Everquest franchise which was very large during its hayday and probably the single largest factor in moving MMOs into mainstream entertainment and away from MUDs.  It's quite possible that had SOE not enjoyed such success with Everquest that there might not even be a World of Warcraft today; in fact, Blizzard may have went on to make Starcraft/Warcraft 4 and Diablo 3 instead.  Actually now that I think about it... screw you Everquest; I'd rather have had Diablo 3.

Otherwise their track record isn't really that good... Still, I think it would be foolish to underestimate them at this point.  To everyone saying that there's no chance of making a bigger game than World of Warcraft, I can only remember a time when IBM said that no one would ever need a computer in their house.

I'm with you WoW, I'd rather want Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 & 3 sooner...
MMO's are boring.

sony spin.....

moar funny pictures

Meh, every MMO developer says they are the next WoW (World of Warcraft, not Words of Wisdom) killer and every one of them fails because they fail to bring anything new and and anything of high quality.

I lost faith in Sony when they made the PS3 not compatible with FFXI (they should at least have SE do what they did with X360 and enhance everything) with the 40GB model.

Remember Star War Galaxies ?

Eh, I don't put much stock in ANY company saying they can 'beat' World of Warcraft right now. Especially not SOE since they LOST the crown TO World of Warcraft and every game they've released since the original EQ hasn't exactly performed WELL.

The SMART MMO publishers don't even attempt to say they'll beat WoW, and instead just try to focus on their little niche of the market and get/maintain a profitable player base(you can make decent money with a MUCH smaller subscriber-base than WoW currently enjoys)

LOL this thread fails xD I LOVE how some people on this site are spinning Sony's PR Spin >_>; that's just sad. I actually agree with that statement, I think MMO's COULD do much better on consoles. I mean if they had WoW on the PS2, with 100+million dedicated gaming machines in the world. I guarantee you it would have at least made a dent in the percentage. I for one was an avid FFXI player and I refuse to play it on PC, I owned it for the PS2. I've been wanting to play WoW for quite some time, a bunch of my friends started it up again, but I wont, I'm waiting for a console version, and should it not come, well, oh well :/

I doubt consoles have a shot in hell this generation, but it might not be that way next time. I'm just waiting for consoles to come pre-packed with mice and keyboards xD

From 0 to KICKASS in .stupid seconds.

Although I do agree this is BS, I think the way to open MMO's back up to the main market is to take the console route.

I don't know what you mean. WoW is about as mainstream as any game that's ever existed. Part of the reason for that is that it runs on relatively underpowered PCs, which everybody already owns. The main market is made up of just the kinds of folks who won't buy a dedicated gaming machine.

More on the main topic, I'm not sure WoW's success is ever going to be matched, or at least not in the next decade or so. People treat its numbers as the standard to beat now for MMORPGs, which is absolutely ludicrous. WoW is a phenomenal, unheard-of, impossible success. People need to remember that an MMO that maintains a couple hundred thousand subscribers is doing extremely well, and should be praised. Don't even look to WoW as a competitor... that way lies madness.

Oh they must be talking about "The Agency."

lol.

The last decent product soe produced was planes of power.
