And while I'm really enjoying everything it has to offer, there's one thing that really pisses me off: even if your games are physical copies, you still have to install the entire game in the console's hard drive mandatorily. Now, it wouldn't bother me if you had an incredibly big hard drive. Buy while 500 GB (now there's a 1TB model, ok) sounds like a lot, at the moment of truth you'll not even realize and you'll have fill the disk completley. So, 500 GB is close to nothing. And when that happened to me yesterday, I could do nothing but remember how much critized Nintendo was because of its hard drive size. The thing is that even if 32 GB is total crap if you go for digital games, at least you can play as many physical games as you want, without having to worry about it. And at least you can use any external hard drive on the Wii U (even a flashdrive), while PS4 needs an specific one, open the console, etc... So, the situation is, in fact, better in Wii U that it is in PS4, or at the very least, is exactly as bad in both platforms for one reason to another. But, for some reason, while PS4 wasn't that much criticized about this situation, Nintendo got a lot of of hate because of it. My question is... why so many hate for one and so little for the other if, in the end, the situation is not very different between them? And I know I could just remove the data of the games I already finished, but that's not the point. |
The point is, anyone and their dog can swap out the PS4 HDD for a bigger one. Because Sony give you the chance to change the size, everyone is fine with it.
It also depends if the PS4 is your main system or not. I mostly buy exclusives for my PS4 and the multi-platform games for my PC. Therefore I need much longer to fill up the 500 GB as someone who buys exclusives + multi-platform games for his PS4.
Most PS+ games for PS4 (a.k.a. Indie games) are very small, I have dozens of them installed and they only use a fraction of the storage space.
Man you must not be reading the forum much.
I have complained about it since launch.
My biggest issue is not so much having to uninstall and install but the fact that so many games these days are so buggy and require lots of patches, even day one fixes.
When the generation ends were the hell am I going to be able to redownload the patches from if they taken down? This will make all those games totally useless. Hence why uninstalling is not really an option.
Now on Wii U look at the convenience of having your own external hdd ability. You can install all your patches saves to a hdd. you can even back up certain files to another, I just wish it would install the game from disc to hdd to save on laser. When you run out of space you just connect another hdd for your other games.

Why I would care about the reason of why we need to install the entire game in the HDD? That's not my problem, that's Sony's problem. It's annoying, and that's just it. |
Why? Sony's problem?
If it takes a level in the game you are playing 1min 30secs to load, would you still think its Sony's problem?
Why you should care why games need to be installed onto the HDD is cause that's the fastest way to run games as opposed to rewding from the disc. Especially when the games in question are as big as they are these days. All those high rrz textures that give you all that pretty graphics has to go somewhere you know?
12 pages of a thread to discuss how a fixed 32GB of flash isn't remotely comparable to an (upgradable up to 2TB, and more in the future) 500GB HDD.
There are mobile phones with more internal flash memory than the Wii U.
This is what I though at first, however I just remove the games i don't play.... Install times are pretty good (with instant play) anyway, I got mine at lunch... Played tons of games and it's never been a problem so far.
on the other hand, if you like to keep them all installed get a 2TB drive (seagate backup plus slim by example) more space will buy you some time, but you will eventually fill it no matter how big the drive you get is, especially with AAA games being between 10 and 45 GB a piece!

I think I have not explained myself well : it's Sony's problem to find a solution that doesn't involve more problems.

Best part is ignoring how much would cost the console if Sony decided to put 2Tb (4x the memory) in the standard console and how much would cost for Nintendo to have 128Gb (not necessarily flash, if you only use it for saves you could use a option as cheap as you want)... in this case PS4 would cost a lot, but Nintendo only wouldn't feel as cheapskate as they have...
And people saying about using external drive on WiiU, you need to use an external drive with power supply or use special cables, and you can't use for anything else... how obtuse is that? And since it must be dedicated to WiiU, if you only need to download to HD the digital games (mostly VC and very little AAA) how long would you take to fill a 2Tb? Would be like forever.
