Forums - Nintendo - What type of game will the NX killer app be?

Nintendo is going after the Japanese smart-phone gamer. I'd bet it's going to be something like the most popular browser game. Perhaps even Mario & Dragons style.

I don't think you're far off. Like a lot of people will scoff at it, but that's the type of game I think it could be.

New Super Mario Bros. NX.

Zelda U ain't a launch title.

I have a theory about those scroll wheel "bumpers". We can't really tell from the patent, but what if those are to "add" more buttons to the system? What if you can press a quick switch button on the back, scroll to a button letter, and then lock that button in place and assign an action to it? This could offer 4 or 5 buttons PER bumper, or offer new playstyle experiences via "free wheeling" where the bumper(s) are not locked in place, but are used for scrolling, zooming, etc.
The new killer app could be something to help show off this new control style, where maybe you're looking through a scope to either search for things or shoot things, and you use the wheels for precision aim. You get on a certain aiming plane, and then you scroll a click or two with the left bumper to zoom in, and scroll a click or two with the right bumper to slowly move left or right. Say a stealth/spy game where you have to gather intel, or take out a target using targeting equipment or a scope or something. Another application this could have is quick adjustments or item switching in games, which they could really use with a huge variety of titles. If it sticks, I'm going to say that Zelda will use it for a few puzzles as well where you have to use the scrolling wheels to balance left and right across a log or rope, or where maybe you slide blocks or something into a panel on the left and are trying to match patterns doing the same with the right.
There are a lot of applications this COULD have, and the locking button thing would obviously be self-explanatory, but regardless, I think that Nintendo will do something completely outside of what I just thought of. These would be applications for things that I can think of, not the geniuses at Nintendo, I'm sure they have much bigger and better plans.

While I think the scroll wheels will be awesome, I don't at all think that they can successfully sell the NX by making a game meant to show off the potential of them. They are a refinement upgrade, not a revolutionary one.

I dont really know what society wants these days besides smartphones ( i do like the smartphone idea you said ). I mean Nintendo can aim those hardcore gamers <---- But they already have a PS4/XONE/PC and might not want to invest on another console. Or the casual gamers <---- But they might also be too busy with the immense library on Google Play and the App Store and thinks its enough for them.

But i think they just need to amaze people like with the Nintendo Wii. Make them go "WOW", "I want that", "Now that's something new". and how Having a good idea is one thing, but if you dont make that idea well known to the public then it wont sell. <---- Like for me, when people saw the Wii U at my house or at school they go "What is that" or "Is that a Wii".

Odds are it'll be something that has inter-play between one of their better quality, high visibility mobile titles.

So prime candidates would be Animal Crossing, Tomodachi Life, and Pokemon -- something that can bring Miiverse activity into the larger sphere of social media.

I think you're on the right track, but I think it'll be a completely new IP. I think they'll want to attatch the NX hardware brand to that IP in a similar fashion to how they did the same with Wii Sports and the Wii or Nintendogs/Brain Age and the DS.

I'd consider a re-emergence of QoL and/or Wii Fit in the cards too.

Think Wii Fit U meter, but in band form, and has some kind of party game built around it.

Having Wii Fit branding would be out of date, but leveraging existing Wii Fit hardware still might prove to be a good idea.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I mean, they could, but I don't see it. It'll be completely new, and I don't think it'll have anything at all to do with other IP.

Whatever it is, it'll be something universal and familiar though. Brain Age, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and Nintendogs worked so well because everybody wants to be smart, everyone is familiar with sports, everyone knows about fitness, and everyone likes dogs. Obviously I'm using superlatives, but these aren't culturally unfamiliar settings for a game. I think it'll be something like that.
