Forums - Sony - PS2 going so strong. Why?

I can see how a sale like Best Buy is having this week could sell quite a few of these. The PS2 is $130 and Rock Band (with guitar, drums, and microphone) for the PS2 is $160, but the sale has both combined at $70 off that, or $220 total. The same kind of package of a Rock Band box set with the lowest priced XBOX360 would be $450 and $570 with the 40GB PS3. If Rock Band was out for the Wii it would likely cost over $400 for both and of course there is that supply situation. Sony does seem to know how to keep the PS2 sales going. Definitely makes me wonder about whether they will do something with the backward compatibility situation with the PS3 at some point to try to pull in those PS2 owners. I'm sure that Sony would like to turn anybody who buys that package deal from Best Buy into a PS3 owner at some point. --Darin

For 300 $ you can get a PS2 , a memory card , an extra controller and 20 more games ... now tell me if thats not a good deal ?

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

PS2 is the cheapest console on the market and it has over 2000 games to chose from. Sounds like a good deal to get a PS2 instead of the other consoles on the market. Both XBox 360 and PS3 are expensive. The Nintendo Wii which has PS2 graphics is like expensive too. Nothing beats the classic PS2 with a huge library of games.

Cause it is the best system ever, maybe the Wii will outshine it but i does not seem like it with weak third party support but i expect that to change.

Several factors:
Price obviously

Casual appeal - GH3, Rock Band, karoake games sell a lot of PS2 these days

Wii - That's right the Wii is helping sell PS2s. How? Because now instead of making a game for a dying system, 3rd parties can make the same game for the PS2 and Wii and get two for the price of one (and a bit).

Massive library of cheap games

No b/c on PS3 - So if you got a PS3 and then your PS2 dies, you need a new PS2 to play your large library of favorite PS2 games.

Sony dropped the ball - The casual gamers made the PS2 the monster success it was but Sony ignored this audience with the PS3 aiming it squarely at the 360's core gamer audience. Now they'll have a hell of a time to convince that casual market to upgrade to a PS3 instead of a Wii - once the PS3 reaches sub-$300 levels that is. In the meantime, their only defense against the Wii remains the PS2.

I hate to say it but the PS2 might be the greatest gaming system ever. It continues to sell, the games are cheap and the library is massive. I picked a new one up on "Black Friday". Gamestop had the slimline brand new for $69.99. It was $30 off instantly and a $30 gift card which I used as part of the purchase.

It has the staying power of a porn star, lol. Sony is happy cause the PS3 sales were lackluster if it wasn't for the PS2 offset Sony's 2007 would have been bleak. It's making Sony's 2008 look great since the PS3 sales are up and the PS2 is still selling.

Now Playing: Crysis 2

Last Finished: BulletStorm

Online IDs: PSN: computermaximus, XBL: computermaximus

Personally I dont understand why people are buying the ps2 seems like a waste of money. I missed out all the ps2 games cause i got an xbox and seemed logical to put the 100+ dollar cost of the ps2 into the ps3... and get a 60/80 gb version. That wayat least in a couple of years you can still use the ps3 but you wont even be able to sell your ps2 for much due to the number of units in the world. Thats my 2cents.

I bought Guitar Hero 2 for PS2 just a month ago cuz it was cheap at $50. I mean, it's still a game, just slightly worse graphics. I wouldn't care. Better than paying $30-40 dollar extra for a wii or PS3 version. The PS2 is still a great system and I would definitely buy another one when they announce they are stopping production.

Currently loving my Wii x2, Xbox 360 Pro & Xbox 360 Arcade, and Final Fantasy 7 Advent Children Limited "Cloud Black" 160GB PS3

GAMEFLY & GOOZEX FTW

PS2 should never be killed off, hopefully Sony keep it alive for another 4 years.

well sony guarenteed 10 years and its in year 7, so your getting at least 3 of your 4 years.

OT: I find it amazing that its selling so well now. Someone above me had a good point, put the 120 dollars towards a PS3 with BC.

I'm back...
