Forums - Gaming - (Japan is winning) Western games or Japanese games, which one do you prefer?

Which approach do you prefer?

Japanese videogames 185 49.87%

Both equal 88 23.72%

Some Japanese games 18 4.85%

Some Western games 7 1.89%

I don't prefer either. There're good games on both ends :)

Japanese ones

There you have an idea for your YouTube channel, make a rant video of why Japanese games are more appealing.

Why rant?

I love jrpg's so yea.

Most viewers already know that hahahahah.

I say both equal for me, but I prefer japanese games a little bit more.

Hory shet! That is sooo true

You forget Uncharted, Mass effect, to name a few......

These results are somewhat surprising considering how poorly Japanese developers have generally fared since the sixth generation. Personally, I enjoy both pretty much equally.

I love both but I got to say Western games. GTA, Uncharted, Fallout, Red Dead, NBA2K, even the occasional FPS. But its a slim margin at best and my opinion is subject to change when the JRPG's & platformers start rolling out.

I feel like Japanese games get such an easy pass on this website (online overall as well). So many of them stick to their cliche characters, and mediocre looking aesthetics. Some are content with churning the same entry out year in and out (not to say Western doesn't do this), but Japanese games IMO get the pass for it.

This is also based on observation, but I feel Japanese fans have lower standards and are more willing to accept the game for whatever it is. Outside of FF and Metal Gear how many recent Japanese games have even attempted to push their respective hardware? I'm not saying they all need to look like FF, but with some of these entries they barely look marginally better. And I do understand budgets of Western vs. Japanese studios.

Japanese have that charm I do like, but Western games IMO are better overall in looks, story, and overall evolution over the years.

Bloodborne, the Evil Within, Knack, Pro Evolution Soccer, Resident Evil Revelations 2, DoA 5, Bayonetta 2, Dragon Quest heroes, Bladestorm Nightmare: whats wrong with those graphics? And there are soon coming more AAA titles from Japan next year.

You cant really blame a game like neptunia and other japanese games for the way they look? its their art direction, in fact japanese are more flexible in designing their games. They can still design 3D visuals who look decent for what they were aiming for.

With the western devolopers its like either AAA or 2D indie games more they cant do.

Western games have better story? no

Western games have better graphics? at what measure? Bloodborne has the best graphics ever made, on average if you count all the western indie games its also not.

I'd have to agree that Western developed games have better stories overall. I have only encountered a tiny handful of quality stories told in video games and the last time a Japanese game's story impressed me at all was Silent Hill 2.

Also, Bloodborne's graphics aren't even that impressive for the PS4 let alone when compared to PC gaming which is dominated by Western developers.

This is what I'm looking forward to:
