The Sonic franchise has sold over 150 million units lol.

Dude I didn't mean the entire sonic franchise. I meant a single sonic or crash entry.

Ah, my apologies. I misread what you typed. But comparing SM64's sales to Sonic 2's and Crash's is nearly impossible due to the fact that N64 was in a different generation to Sonic and Crash wasn't bundled with PS1 consoles. I know alot of people on this site think you can compare bundeled games to unbundled games but it really isn't possible because which item made people buy the console? Was it the console? Or was it the game?

Super Mario 64 is really awesome game.

Mario 64 was way more revolutionary in every sense, Crash was trying to be Mario on the first place. Gameplay wise Mario 64 is way superior to Crash 1, but if we compare it with Crash 3 things are more equal in terms of fun.

I'd personally pick Mario 64 too since i didn't like the first Crash game much (i thought the 2nd and 3rd were far better), but i don't think Crash was 'trying to be Mario'. It released only 2 - 3 months later, and there was plenty that separated the two of them.

- Collecting 100 wumpa fruit gives you an extra life = collecting 100 coins in Super Mario Bros.

- The spin attack Crash is famous for = Mario has the exact same spin attack with the cape power-up in Super Mario World

- Levels filled with crates = levels filled with question blocks

- Crash has to save his girlfriend from an evil villain = Mario has to save Peach from Bowser

- No spoken dialogue in Crash = ditto for Mario

The only big difference is the jungle setting while Mario levels tend to be more artificial.

Not saying he's right but release date is not an indicator of whether a game is inspired by something else, Mario 64 for example was known about and shown as early as 94, it was all over magazines and game specific TV shows like Gamesmaster after being unveiled, the was nothing like it at the time of unveiling and a tonne of developers would have seen it at event long before release.

In regards to Crash I think he meant Crash was trying to be a 3D Mario or ND's interpretation of what one would be rather then actually copying Mario 64, well that's how his post comes across to me.

And yet the Genesis beat the SNES in the US and the PS1 destroyed the N64 WW. In that respect, I fail to see your point. At the time, both mascots helped their respective systems beat Nintendo so one could easily argue that it was a good idea.

My point is that I don't mourn their death. They had it coming with their arrogance. SNES beat Genesis anyway.

How can a fictional character be arrogant in the real world? Sony really was arrogant back in the PS1 and PS2 days though, and it came back to bite them in the ass when they launched the PS3.

I'm talking about the creators and or owners behind said franchises of course.

People who deny the Mario influence in Crash Bandicoot must be kidding themselves.

Next you'll tell me Uncharted wasn't influenced by Indiana Jones.

There are Piranha Plant and Koopa Troopa knock-offs in Crash Bandicoot for fuck's sake.

Here they're ripping off Yoshi:

I have no doubt that Crash took inspiration from Mario 64, just as both likely considered stuff like Jumping Flash when working out how to best execute a 3D world, but some of those examples are really pushing it. I mean really, [insert male protagonist] saving [insert female side character] from [insert villain]? That was generic before Nintendo even entered the games market.

Regardless, while i didn't much like the first Crash, both it and Mario 64 felt quite different to me, even despite them being part of a genre that was heavily limited by technology at the time (want an on-the-fly interactable object/collectible? [inset basic shape here]). By all means disagree. We can just agree to disagree if that's the case ^^
