Forums - Sony - 20 Years of Play: PlayStation's North America 20th Anniversary

The original PlayStation was released in North America on September 9th 1995, that's 20 years ago today.

Selling over 100 million units, it became the best selling console of its time, and by a pretty large margin, still 20 years later is one of the best selling consoles of all time.

The system is still fondly remembered by many, so I thought it'd be cool to make a thread to share some of our experiences with the system.

I'll start.

Back in 1995 my parents were planning on buying me and my brother a new game box as they called it, we had a Sega Genesis for a good 4 years by that point so it was a bout time to upgrade, following the hype my brother wanted a PlayStation, I was still pretty young back then so just went along with it. The system was sold out everywhere so we got a Sega Saturn instead, not that I'm complaining.

One of our best friends did got a PlayStation though, so we would go to his house nearly everyday to play, I don't really remember what game though, racing something, it was a long time ago you know?

Mid 1996 our friend moved out and we were stuck PlayStation less, I wouldn't really get to play again until like a year later, wasn't very into games then anyway, just played casually.

The first PlayStation game that I remember sinking a lot of time into was Tomb Raider which I got to play on another friends console, around spring of '97, I got addicted to the game and actually managed to beat it from the time I went to his place, the original Tomb Raider is one of my all time favorites, I know that game inside and out from all the time I spent on it.

Anyway by this point my brother had gotten a job and the first thing he did with his money was to, well what else, buy a PlayStation, this was holiday '97,he got only one game, the hottest one of the time, Final Fantasy VII.

The day he brought that box home we were glued to the TV all night playing the game, like from 6 pm to like 3am, we got into some trouble but didn't mind it was fun, pure bliss.

Final Fantasy VII is one of my favorite gaming experiences, now I'm not that big of a fan of the game, honestly I think both VI and IX are way better, but the way we played it made it the most memorable, I only played with my brother and he only played with me, we beat that game together as a team and it was awesome.

By this point the Saturn essentially became my own, my parents had no interest of buying games for both systems so they bought games for the Saturn while my brother bought games for the PlayStation.

The system that he bought would ended up getting lost in around 2002, we had no idea of what happened to it, but by then he was starting to become a family man and I had stopped caring about videogames, so no big loss at the time, but still a shame.

That's my story, What about yours?

I Hate REMASTERS

I Hate PLAYSTATION PLUS

Got a PS1 around the time I was born in 1998.

I played the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy, which were crazy fun, and remain a huge part of my childhood.

I would later get games like Crash Team Racing and Ape Escape, the former being my favortie kart racer to this day, and the latter being the first game I ever played to use full analog control.

I also got Gran Turismo 2 for some reason... I barely remember that game.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Now that I remember, its also the anniversary of the Dreamcast, ha ha.

I actually got that one the day it came out 9/9/99

I had Nes Snes, genesis, saturn, atari. So naturally when the ps1 came out I wanted it. Now I do not remember much early memories of it. But I think we got games for it late in the cycle. I enjoyed FFIV, FFVI, and then FFVII. But the most memorable was when we just bought FFVIII. Put the game in and watched the opening credits and scenes for a long time and got started on one of my favorite games.

After my SNES got busted around 1998, I had to wait for a PS1 by Christmas 1999, and oh was it glorious. Gran Turismo 2 was my first game, but no memory cards until 3 Kings Day (January 6th). I loved it so much. Then, it came Driver and Driver 2, Smackdown 2: Know Your Role, Crash Bandicoot Warped (a busted copy, though), among some others. I might buy Warped on PS3 someday.

Did they skip the Vita in the video? LOL

PS one and Crash bandicoot, those were the best days

They didn't.

I remember my PS1. The poor thing. It lived a good life from about '97 to '03. At least I think it was '97. I was still fairly young then, so it's hard to say when exactly the PS1 entered the home. All I know is that I played tons of Crash, Spyro, Final Fantasy, Legend of Dragoon, Mega Man, and so many others. It was my main system for so long, and I still have the original memory card that came with the system in working order, although it has basically no use since I have a PS3 that does the whole virtual memory card business.

Then disaster struck. And by disaster, I mean my mom ended up babysitting her friend's kids, and they were assholes. They dropped macaroni in the PS1 at one point, dropped a penny inside the system, etc.. Amazingly, the system held out until one fateful day, I went to remove a disc and out came the spinny disc holder whatever with it. Ball bearings went absolutely everywhere. I was able to somewhat salvage the situation and keep it together for another few weeks, but then I was careless one day, accidentally tore the center piece off again, and I couldn't find enough of the bearings to pull anything off.

I was still only around 10 or so when it broke, so I wasn't exactly a fountain of technical knowledge. As such, today I would have just bought what I needed and fixed it but back then I tried relying on my parents and they just tossed it.

At least they ended up buying me a PS2 to replace it, so, I mean, I upgraded pretty nicely.
