That's one way to put it. I prefer calling it the most generic.
Hard to argue, similar design for most popular consoles over the last 20 years

I don't know, I see more shirts with Atari Joysticks or NES controllers in stores.

ICONIC is something remembered. NES controllers does not represent memorable or iconic. |
Memorable and ironic are two words that perfectly describe the NES controller. I'd say, without a doubt, the NES has the most iconic controller ever.
Well, they have forced it into that... I mean, it has been the same controller for, what... like 20 years?
And even then, I still think the NES one is more iconic and I'm sure many agree. Do you see people building giant Dual Shocks, or Dual Shock shaped tables, or hanging Dual Shock art on their walls, or carving the shape of the Dual Shock on their flesh? It's not about being a "good controller", since naturally the DS would win at that, but it's about being a cultural icon. That's what the NES controller is.

Uh I guess...

I dunno man, I kinda see where you're coming from here, but the DS4 is a great controller, way better than the previous ones, at least, from my short experience with them. My only complaint is the sticky analog sticks, but aside from that, it's easily the best controller besides Gamecube's. I like the 360 controller but they make my hand hurt after a while.
I'm now filled with determination.
