Nintendo themselves stated that back when Super Mario Bros 2 came out in the US. Also, they reference birdo as "him" in various games, but they also use "she" and "it".

For all those who think Nintendo is kiddy, they really like to mix it up in their video games, but not really come straight out and say it. I mean, Yoshi and Birdo are together, yet Birdo is a guy, who dresses like a girl.... I'm at work, so I didn't click the link, but the google summary makes this site look like a good place to look it up. www.transsexual.org/birdo.html

 I just got the Birdo trophy in Brawl and it mentions Birdo's gender confusion.

I vote for Wendy. That dame had some moxy.
