I'm very conflicted about the release schedule.

On one hand, I'm one of those people that gets completely overwhelmed by level editors very easily. Even something as simple as LittleBigPlanet or Minecraft overwhelms me a bit. So the fact that they'll slowly introduce me to the tools and how it works is something I feel that I need, tbh.

On the other hand, I feel like Nintendo is treating their overall fanbase like juveniles. I think the release schedule should be an option, because some simply don't need it and it's quite silly to force them upon it. But hey, that's just my opinion.

As a side note, I absolutely believe this game will be console-defining for the Wii U. It's the first real game where you can make Mario levels, it utilizes the Wii U's capabilities, it gives the player a ton of freedom (after the first 9 days) and it basically has endless content. It's a game that people will be playing years down the line like Mario Kart or Smash, and I think this is a really great step for the Mario franchise. In my opinion, this game alone will make the Wii U worth buying (although I can say that for a few games already).

Same thing happened to me. When the game was revealed I thought "that's pretty neat" but didn't pay it much mind. Now after seeing alot more trailers and taking in more information it looks like a must buy. What's weird is that this happened with Super Mario 3D World as well. I guess Nintendo just saves all of the "that's awesome" tidbits till right before the game is released.

I felt the same about SM3DW also, and now it's one of my favorite games on the system.

Nintendo just has this ability to inject charm into their games, and I think simply watching them doesn't give the same feeling as playing them.

Looks like if all of my Mario dreams came true in one single package.

They did the same thing with splatoon, locking ranked mode (although it was lock for a good reason) and most of the maps until they decided  to launch them so I guess nintendo is trying something new.

And I agree this is game a most needed step for the mario franchise, and hopefully nintendo tries this level creator idea with their other franchises.

I didn't really mind it in Splatoon (except for the rotation of modes/maps, but that's a different thing entirely) so I don't think I'll mind it with SMM either.

I feel like a Zelda creator would be epic, but ultimately way more complex than this game so they'd have to work hard to make it accessible as possible.

The LBP planet editor is far from simple! It took me over a month to build a 30 minute level and another one to debug and polish it.
I have no idea if you can make puzzles in Mario maker? Tinkering with logic puzzles and mechanisms, either with the help of pistons and card keys or redstone is what I like most. From what I've seen so far it seems more action oriented. I hope you can make your own mechanisms.

Btw if you buy the game 2 weeks after release, do you get everything unlocked at once? In that case I'll just wait. Or does it check your play time?

It's a must buy regardless. Can't wait to see what my kids come up with, it will be a good start to teach them game design. LBP editor is far too finicky for that, besides a few rocket powered cars they quickly lost interest. Now, what tricky levels will I come up with :)

Reviews sites and other media outlets have already got the game and are posting screenshots of parts of their stage on Miiverse.

Looks like they're going to review the whole toolset since Magikoopas, spiny beetles, and music blocks aren't available at the start.

Nice Thread! :)
On the release schedule, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't little big planet also unlock content over time as you play through the single player campaign?
This approach might be a little diffrent, as in it's purely time-based, but bottom line still is that not everything is available at launch and has to be unlocked over time.
Yes, I get why this spoon-feeding, sort of controlling attitude of Nintendos towards their audience is kind of annoying, but really delving into every single feature as it becomes available might not be a bad thing either. Limitations can sometimes even fuel creativity.
Besides nine days to unlock everything isn't too bad of a wait imo.
