Forums - Sony - Ok, ok, what's the big deal with Resistance?!

Obviously its down to individual taste, but given that recently the SP side of FPS tends to be either weak or too short or both, Resistance delivered a more traditional and longer SP experience, with many differing levels to get through, some very good set pieces and a nice (if perhaps a little too understated) story and local (I for one really liked the alternative history vibe and the 'feel' of the game).

Its MP was solid and came closest to what I think of as PC MP in that you could have large battles (I just can't get into the smaller console MP at all, although COD4 can be fun).

I still look to the SP more than the MP and from that perspective I'd say Resistance put in more effort that GOW and Halo 3, although it was not as good for MP in terms of polish.

Overall GOW deserves the higher score (I think its a 90% game next to Restiance as an 85% game - my own scores) when its MP is combined with its SP. But the SP of Resistance outshines GOW easily IMHO opinion if you stick with it and remember when SP FPS meant a slow reveal of story and what's going on together with some twists and multiple, extended set-pieces.

I think if you look at COD4 SP vs Resistance you'll see COD4 is a string of excellent set pieces but that the SP overall is disjointed and really only exists for the sake of the set-pieces, with Resistance there is more variety and a better progression along a traditional story.

Like many on this page I look forward to see whether R2 can keep what worked in Resistance while adding the polish and 'ingredient X' needed to take the title into the 90% plus range and make it a true AAA title.

I think Insomniac just might have it in them to do so. Here's hoping anyway.

I finally started playing Resistance on my PS3. After playing the game for nearly 4 hours, I have to admit I walked away from it thinking 'Is that it?' I have played Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3, as well as Gears O War, Bioshock, Call of Duty 2 and COD 4 and other shooters and I can honestly say, as a FPS fan, Resistance is a very forgetable title.

All this time, I have been hearing folks brag on it, saying it was better than Gears and truth be told, I see elements of the game that are cool - that tagging bullet thing is legit and the enemies are intense, but I dropped the controller and just had to ask OWNERS and folks who have experience with the game what's up with it.

Ok - as I stated, I'm not trying to flame, but I want to know what makes folks say this game is *all that?*


 I don't have the game but I have played it and I agree that it's nothing special and my honest opinion is that it's just not that good.  It's not a bad launch title in the same way Excite Truck wasn't a bad launch title, but the game just wasn't that great.

When there was absolutely nothing else to compare to it on the PS3 for the longest time it did stand out as one of the best titles just because there was nothing else as good as it.  This doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good game, it just means all the others were worse.

Now that the PS3 has a few more titles to compare to it, it is easy to see it's pretty mediocre.  Hopefully Resistance 2 will be better, but as for Resistance, it's just nothing special.

It varies from game to game, with a little addition here and there sometimes (example: Turok rolls , WOW!) I feel like I'm playing with a rock wielding a gun.

 As opposed to platformers where you jump around in 25% gravity. /sarcasm

 I wasn't disagreeing, just trying to lighten the mood a little.  One of my favorite games is Splinter Cell, precisely because of the freedom of motion, and options about how to approach each confrontation.





Resistance really does have a slow start to it... it seems very generic at first but it gets much more interesting after the first hour.

Yeah, FPS games are hindered, basically because you would get confused If you were allowed "free movement".
Have you ever tried rolling in real life like you could in a 3rd person game?
Imagine seeing the same view you had in a game with a first person point of view.

But if you played COD4 or Bioshock, you can't deny how immersive FPS games are;
especially if you play in the dark with a big HDTV.

OT: I liked Resistance for its split screen co-op.
I have fond memories of the game because of it.
Especially running around rifle butting all the Humanoid aliens without weapons. ^_^
