After more than three years, Nintendo’s free television service on Wii U, Nintendo TVii, will shut down in North America.
At 12 p.m. PT/ 3 p.m. ET on August 11, Nintendo TVii will be inaccessible. A Wii U system update will follow shortly thereafter, and “will remove the Nintendo TVii icon from the Wii U Menu and Wii U GamePad controller’s HOME Button Menu.”
The news should not come as a surprise, however. In February Nintendo of Europe notified its Wii U owners that the service was scheduled to terminate as well.
Nintendo TVii provides fans with an interactive way to enjoy various aspects of TV from the comfort of the Wii U GamePad. Television, movies, and sports programs are able to be watched — using a multitude of different options — seamlessly via capabilities specifically designed for Wii U.
Each person in the house can setup their own customized profile to list their favorite shows or movies. They can also keep in touch with friends by commenting or chatting on their favorite social networks such as Miiverse, Facebook, or Twitter.
The Nintendo TVii service was one of the main selling points of Wii U, which was introduced by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime during the Wii U Preview Presentation in September 2012 — two months before Wii U launched in the Americas. You can watch that presentation below.
