It does worse than the Wii U. I don't think Nintendo going out of business is a possibility even if the NX is a big flop.

That the NX has a very heavy focus on mobile and extreme casual, then sells like crazy- that would be the worst because Nintendo as we have known it would be gone- They sure as hell won t be making a Metroid Prime game that cost $25 million and takes 3 years when they can make Amiibo Party 4 for mobile and console in 30 days for $1.5 million Same goes for full Zelda titles, full 3D Mario games etc

A powerful & expensive console that still gets little 3rd party support and causes Nintendo developed titles to take longer to develop creating even more and longer droughts.

NX travels back in time and kills all inventors of microchips.

Imo worse case scenario is a hybrid console that in its attempt to fill 2 roles - fills neither.  For example it may be say a few times stronger than the Vita, but if it can't have at least 4 hours of battery life it really fails on both fronts.

If something like that happened, and it had a similar software situation to that of the Wii U it might not even sell 14 million.

Worst case, the NX does moderately well but Nintendo abandons/kills it early on to focus on mobile games, amiibo, Japanese arcades and theme parks which blow up, makes Nintendo the Disney of Japan for real, has them buy out all other Japanese 3rd parties except Square Enix. The shift in high end game development stalling in Japan causes both Sony and Microsoft's game divisions to collapse and sells off those portions off. Hackers ruin Steam, Android plus iOS and console gaming as we know it dies with EA Origin being the only one worthwhile.

It causes world hunger.

Nintendo decides to roll with another expensive gimmick that eats up most of the budget and ensures the console is weak for its price.

It gives you herpes.
