4) MGS3: Snake Eater - I really can't say too much about this one as I was so disgusted with MGS2 and I never got around to it.

Don't miss out on MGS3 because of MGS2. It's without a doubt the strongest overall game in the series. The "Metal Gear Bullshit™" that nearly ruined MGS2 is almost completely absent from this one (there's a guy who shoots lightning from his hands and can stand up to stinger missiles for no apparent reason, but that's about it).

Metal Gear Solid 1 : perfect, innovative 10/10
Metal Gear Solid 2 : lame story, nothing really new 8.5/10
Metal Gear Solid 3 : better than the second one, harder 9/10
Metal Gear Portable Ops : a complete dissapointment ( cannot understand the great reviews ) 6.5/10

I agree with this analysis and these scores, except I'd probably give MGS2 more like a 7.5, or maybe lower. I really didn't like that game.

Of the ones I've played...

MGS1: Dated graphics, but the great sound and voice work helped it age better than most other PS1 games. About the right level of "over-the-top-ness." 9/10

MGS2: Pretty much the same gameplay as the first game, which is okay. Raiden's banter with his girlfriend is painful to listen to, though, and the story goes a little too far "out there." 7/10

MGS3: Nigh-unplayable, in my opinion. The menu-based functions (eating and healing) add nothing but tedium to the game, and removing the HUD radar makes playing it a chore and a half. The voice work and silliness are still solid, though, so it's not a total stinker. 3/10

"'Casual games' are something the 'Game Industry' invented to explain away the Wii success instead of actually listening or looking at what Nintendo did. There is no 'casual strategy' from Nintendo. 'Accessible strategy', yes, but ‘casual gamers’ is just the 'Game Industry''s polite way of saying what they feel: 'retarded gamers'."

yeah its only 15 bucks now so I'll eventually get around to playing MGS3. Hrm. I should get a PS2 at that then, eh? maybe I'll wait until the MGS4 pack comes out and I'll get a PS3-- oh wait what about BC?

crap

For people who didn't like MGS3, did you guys play the Subsistence edition? In my opinion, that game had the best gameplay out of any MGS game to date because of the new camera. It's basically the same camera that they are using for MGS4.

MGS3: Subsistence is my favorite. Great story (the story of The Boss is so sad) and great gameplay (new camera = win).
MGS1 is my second favorite. Started the MGS series and was an awesome experience.
MGS2 was a huge disappointment. Rose was so annoying, and the story was so convoluted. Plus, I played MGS3: Subsistence before MGS2, and the lack of camera control made the game unplayable to me.

MGS: The Twin Snakes: Awesome
MGS 2: Awesome
MGS3: Awesome

How's that for ratings? :)

About the MGS2 story: Yeah, it was definitely out there. Still, I enjoyed it. I guess so many storylines go by the book and spoonfeed you everything, I liked how MGS 2's story made my head spin.

I particularly enjoyed Otacon's strange revelation and his cheesily agonized moan/scream, followed by the rotating camera as he and Snake exchanged the even cheesier secret fraternity handshake thingy. The whole Otacon deal wasn't really necessary, but I still fondly reminisce about it to this day.

I would actually put MGS2 as my number one. It was the first MGS I played, and I loved it.

1. MGS 2
2. MGS 3
3. MGS

MGS comes last on my list for the simple fact that I've never played it.

Consider my list somewhat biased given the order I played the games in, and the lack of play MGS recieved. =D

TBH, I have never played a MGS game. I feel guilty saying that, but in my defense, I have never owned a Sony system until the PS3. Maybe I will look into these games this summer during the annual summer drought.

@Loadedstatement: There is a package called The Twin Snakes for Gamecube that has updated versions of MGS1 and 2, if you're interested.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

@loadedstatement: The summer is when MGS4 comes out. Still, I'd recommend you try out MGS: TTS, MGS2, and MGS3.

@thekitchensink: Twin Snakes is only a remake of MGS1, with a few small differences besides the graphics. MGS2 isn't included in The Twin Snakes.
