Intelligent Systems must be delighted to see Fire Emblem doing so well this generation, especially when it was almost canned altogether before the success of Awakening. It's pretty much confirmed 3DS will have the top two games in the franchise by a very large margin. I don't think we can consider this series niche anymore .

Honestly, this.

While I thoroughly enjoyed FE Awakening I am sure it would have sold much less if it didnt have a waifu system.

 

Still, incredible numbers for any game in Japan.
