Forums - Nintendo - A way to make third party games sucsessful on wii u?

I actually though about this idea as I played black flag.

Probably too much work for them to do it right with the wii u's low install base. A new graphical style could have been an easy way for them to address the low framerate in the wiiu version... Redo the voices and make it less grisly and more genuinely child friendly with a lower age rating and you could open it up to a much larger age demographic.

These are just wild guesses, perhaps its 90% kids/10% nintendo fans or 10% kids/90% nintendo fans or any other share between. And correlation does not imply causation... the fact that Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, New Super Mario Bros. and Wind Waker HD have great sales and "cartoony graphic" doesn't proof that the cartoony look is the most important factor for the great sales. Maybe they sell great because they have great gameplay or because Mario and Zelda games get great reviews or because Mario and Zelda games have a great reputation or because Nintendo was advertising the heck out of them... or a combination of all these reasons.

So please explain why Bayonetta 2, Assassins Creed 4, Need for Speed Most Wanted U, Mass Effect 3 and much more didnt sold good. They good gret reviews too. And special bayo2 is exclusive to wii u.

Easy, they had neither Mario nor Link as main character. ;)

But if you are really into the "cartoony" cel-shading look in AAA games... there are many cel-shading mods for PC games and PC-emulators out there:

So where are zelda and mario in splatoon, Nintendoland (just as minigames) or wii party U ?

Btw you can dress bayonetta as samus aran or link. So they are kind of in the game.

Your videos just show how "easy" it is to change realistic textures with cell shading looking one. All that is probl made by mostly a single modder as a hobby. A professional developer team could do that in a few weeks, maybe even faster.

Nintendo gamers have a no relationship, or in a lot of cases a negative relationship, with 3rd party developers. It would take a lot of effort from 3rd parties to win these consumers back after decades of disregard. I don't see this happening. The userbase is too small for 3rd parties to care when they have a faithful following elsewhere.

This is why Nintendo is moving to their unified platform strategy. You shouldn't expect anything from 3rd parties on current or future Nintendo consoles.

Wow. Most wii u owner and console owner in general are casuals who dont care if anything is third first or whatever party. Im sure 9 out of 10 mio wii u owner dont "hate" ubisoft or ea or whatever, their games just dont appeal to them.

Many of my rl-friends who got mostly  got a ps4/pc dont even know that games like splatoon or even games like mario kart made by nintendo. The majority of people dont buy games because of its publishers, that bs. There is no "bad relationship".

Wii U/Nintendo console only owners are just not interested in realistic looking games. Thats because they are young (kids do look cartoony movies not realistic ones right) or just personal preference. People who want realistic looking games just get a ps4/xbox one.

All those big AAA Blockbusters will never sell near as many copies on nintendos systems as on ps/xbox. Even when nx is easy to port it wont happen.

Nintendo only gamers come in two flavors:

Newer casual 'Nintendo only' gamers that have no relationship with 3rd parties.
-or-
Old more hardcore 'Nintendo only' gamers that have a bad relationship with 3rd parties.

I promise you that there are Nintendo gamers that have a 'bad relationship' with 3rd party developers.  This is what happens when you've been ignored and given crappy ports repeatedly for decades.  Being cartoony is not the sole criterion for a game to sell well on a Nintendo console.  There have been plenty of cartoony 3rd party games made for Nintendo's sytem that didn't perform well.  Those big AAA blockbusters won't magically sell as many copies on Nintendo's system simply because they are cartoony.  They sell well on PS & Xbox because 3rd parties have been building and nurturing their fanbase there for DECADES.  This doesn't exist on Nintendo's consoles.  It has nothing to do with being cartoony or realistic.

It makes no sense to invest a bunch of money to create and market to a relatively small group of gamers when their fans already game on a different system.  They would need to either create and nurture a new userbase of fans -or- convince their existing fans to migrate.  Neither of those situations is likely- not on the WiiU, not on the NX, and not on any console after that.  There is simply no incentive.

Splatoon was a completly new cartoony game, got marketing like a AAA title and is doing awesome. You dont need a fanbase.

There are some Nintendo fans on wii u that dont like tbird partys. Thats pretty much the "real nintendo fans" not kids. That are person who grew up with  nintendo and got the system at launch and play games like bayonetta 2. By the sales of bay2 you can guess how many people that are.

The majority of wiiu gamers are kids or people that love the cartoonish styled nintendo games. Poeple that dont care about first/third partys or publishers in general, they just want fun looking cartoonish games and they dont give a fck who made them. Thats why many nintendo titles are doing soo god, splatoon as a new ip does soo good and games like bayo2 or devils third will do very very bad. Even Xenoblade X does bad in japan compared to Splatoon and its an established "big" nintendo-franchise.

People who want realistic looking games are not on wii u. Why should they? The realistic looking games are on ps4/xbox one.  And its other way around for wii u.

And also Graphics (and marketing) are the main selling points in games. its not the quality. If it would be quality, games like destiny, cod or watchdogs which good bad reception wouldnt sell that crazy.

Some realistic looking games on wii u and their cartoony "counterparts" compared in terms of sales.

Need for Speed Most wanted U (200k) vs Sonic all Star racing transformed (460k) [dont need to talk about mario kart right?]

Watchdogs (80k) vs Lego City Undercover (900k)

Assassins Creed 4 (260k) vs Windwaker HD (1,3mio)

COD:Blops2 (290k) vs splatoon (1mil+)

Nintendoland was heavily bundled and many Wii U users wanted to try out the heavily advertised "asymmetric gameplay" which was one of the unique selling points of the Wii U.

Splatoon is a (heavily advertised) great multiplayer game which would also work with more realistic graphic... why shouldn't it sell?

Wii Party U... I don't get the appeal (the same goes for the Wario games), but many people seem to like these simple party games.

But if all it takes is a cartoony and/or colorful look to sell well on Wii U... why didn't Darksiders 2 sell better? Why aren't the Borderlands games on Wii U? Where is Team Fortress 2 for Wii U? Where is the Wii U version of Life is Strange?

what are the sales now? How long has it been out and compare that to the two other platforms. The game is still full price while the first game sold better thanks to being longer on the market as well as ending up in the bargain bin. I still haven't bought my copy yet but planning on getting soon it as it is worth it.

its at 600-700k.

It is 27€ on amazon in grmany. Full priece=

The game is frequently on sale for 10-15€ on local stores.

It was the 2nd best rated game on metacritic in 2014 (first was smash).

There is no audience on wii u for those games. Even if they are almost perfect.

+keep in mind that many people bought a wii u just for that game. Thats game wasnt bought by the majority of the wii u´s audience. Those people will get every multiplattform on their pc/ps4/xbox one.

In addition games like Mass effect 3, need for speed most wanted U and deus Ex human revolution where very good ports. Still sold very bad (between 0,09 and 0,22mio).

you're ignoring the details that matter but I don't really see the point to explain them all. Lets just agree to disagree

    R.I.P Mr Iwata :'(

Darksider 2 wasnt really cartoony/colourfull and wasnt rated e. Borderland and co arnt either.

I doubt Splatoon would do anything as good with realisitc graphics. Devils Third will be a online shooter too and looks fun too, lets check the sales of that game when its out in 2 month and u will see ;)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but retexturing the AAA-games and using cel shading won't be enough to get an E-rating. They would have to change most death animations, change or ditch many weapons and moves and even change the story of most successful 3rd-party AAA games.

All that work and costs for the slight chance that the totally conversed Wii U versions would appeal to Wii U gamers?

No. A lot of developers did this on the Wii, and people HATED it.
