Forums - Nintendo - Fear holding Nintendo back- the main reason for its failures and eventual demise?

Hello everonye,

After reading Keiji Inafu interview on Gamespot. I have come to the conclusion the fear is holding Nintendo back. Nintendo's aversion at risk-taking and adapting to the market is severely hampering its sucess. Just look how Nintendo games lacks a good online multiplayer-online chats- to prevent children from  getting insulted. Or how Nintendo does not rank  Smash players  based on the best players instead it focuses on how far they are from being the worst. Nintendo by protecting their family friendly image lacks competitivenss and also the risk-averse attitude causes them to be left behind by more open-minded companies like Sony . As Inafu says "Japanese people are shy and they are scared of things that they don't know. Because of that they just stay inside and never come out." Nintendo lacks the attitude that Inafude has of taking matter into your own hands, of being competitive and of not being afraid of failure. Look at Microsoft still figthing it out in Japan, despite Japanese gamers rejecting  the Xbox. Nintendo needs an overhaul-where most of the companies regular Iwata,  and even Miyamoto step down and allow for leaders and innovators like Inafudem, Igashia and Suzuaki to take charge. Only by embracing progress will Nintedo thrive.

PS:Please be respectful and give thoughtful replies. Try to give evidence for your views and don't simply lash out.

I don't know if it's fear. I think it's identity. There are things that I would never do just because my own personal programming stops me from doing it. I think Nintendo has personally gone the blue ocean strategy because that's how they've always been. Where sony and microsoft and most of the other developers going one way with a trend, Nintendo purposely swerves itself into it's own finite personality. And despite all the criticism they're getting about it, it's actually placed them in an enviable situation. When Nintendo announced mobile, the internet exploded in criticism. When they announced the deal with Universal Studio, boom again. The market is always looking to Nintendo for leadership, despite their place in the console marketplace. And year over year over year, Nintendo is always amazing people, always being talked about, always the company to look at to usher in a new generation of gaming. I don't think it's fear, it's just NIntendo.

Why so many nintendo needs to change threads latley?

The only retarded and backwards thing they do is giving no trophies for their games. Voice chat and online arent important to me at all

Probably the least of Nintendo's worries right now

Hmm, I don`t think I can agree with your post or with your reasons behind your claim. If I`m not mistaken, your claim is that Nintendo is afraid to take risks out of fear, but I don`t think that is the case. In fact, Nintendo has taken big risks, especially with the Wii and Wii U. They took what was the standard and went for a new direction, which people doubted and claimed they would fail, but the Wii succeeded, while the Wii U failed. Both of those were huge risks that they took. So I wouldn`t say they`re afraid of taking risks. They`re doing the opposite, actually, which could be more so with the NX. They also took risks with funding Bayonetta 2 and producing Wonderful 101 as well as Splatoon, a game no other company would fund and new IPs. Ninten is also quite active with audiences outside of Japan, taking part in events like E3 and meeting with youtubers around the US.

I don`t think Inafune`s points fits well with Nintendo. Also, Nintendo cutting online features for games like Splatoon was likely a call to make a good experience for everyone, and allow a new IP to be a success, and Smash`s ranking system, well, Sakurai wanted to do something different.

I think they are "cautious" particularly of Microsoft.

Any company that can just cut a check and buy you out overnight like they're buying a new car to put in their garage next to 4 or 5 others tends to do that to you.

If it was just Sony, I think Nintendo would be more open to competing directly. But Sony *and* Microsoft .... nah. They don't want a direct piece of that fight.

Even if they "won" I think in Nintendo's mind they would "lose" because they would be forced to adopt MS/Sony's tactics of losing money, having to pay developers, spending a lot more on marketing, etc. that Nintendo finds unfavorable.

But Nintendo's always been financially a pretty conservative company starting from the 1980s onwards. So that's nothing new. Video games must work as a business for them, it's not a hobby like it is for Microsoft.

It's also easy to sit behind a keyboard and say "go compete directly against this company 5 times your size!" when you have no stake in the fight. If I told you to go fight someone at a bar three times your size, I'm guessing you're going to be a little afraid, even if you are tough. Because you're the one who's going to get your ass beat, I'm just going to be sitting there watching and saying "well I guess that wasn't a good idea".

I like how people continually talk about Nintendo's "demise", as if that's actually going to be a thing. The only way that ever happens, is if the video game industry itself disappears. Otherwise, so long as video games exist, Nintendo will.

I think they are doing or will do in the future risk moves like Fusion, QoL and mobile games.

fear? no.

stubborn moreso than fear. the rest is a lack of knowledge and expertise caused by their self imposed isolation to fullfill their priority to "surprise" everyone.

I don't know if it's fear, but delusion. Nintendo is delusional.
