Forums - Gaming - Reggie of Nintendo comments on 360

I love that he responded to a question, if he didn't respond I would have lost respect for him for being scared to voice his thoughts. Also he didn't go into attacking mode, he just answered it shortly and clearly.

People gotta stop being uptight pansies and scared and voice their thoughts more

I don't agree. As a commercial venture it has not been a huge success (though this generation has been far more successful than the last) however as a challenge to Sony - it has had far more luck and may well have more than payed for itself in that it is partially responsible for the comparative failure of the PS3.

But how does the comparitive failure of the ps3 help them? In the Xbox vs PlayStation war, yes it's a good thing, but the point was what good came of them entering the console wars at all? They've lost billions, and the ps3 going strong would not have hurt them in the slightest if they didn't have a console competing with it.

I mean, losing billions on a project to hurt a competitor that you never would've had had you not started the project is hardly the project paying for itself.

They were afraid of Sony gaining a presence in the living room that could eventually replace the PC, thus causing Windows to become obsolete and losing them their main source of income. They decided to head it off early by attacking that presence in the living room.

They don't seem to be as afraid of Nintendo (with things like Viva Pinata DS), probably because Nintendo seems less interested in making a media centre type thing and more interested in making a games console.

@RubangB. You mean all alone in his office. At his computer. With the door locked. No idea.

What kind of power does Reggie really have at Nintendo? It seems to me that all the shots are called in Japan and he's just the poster boy in America. What exactly did he do that contributed to the success of the Wii? If he wasn't there would it have sold a lot less or something?

His job entails taking names at major game conventions.

Is that before or after said names asses are kicked?

He's Reggie Fils-Aime. He's about kicking ass and taking names. So, it's the ass-kickery, followed by the name-takery

Does anyone else think his 'introduction' to the world at E3 '04 was amazing?  From the moment he walked onstage, you could tell he had charisma, and that Nintendo had started on a new path.

Also, Rath=correct.  The Xbox brand was never meant to dominate the market (of course it would have been a nice bonus).  Sony was on track to make a system that took the media centre idea away from PC's, and they were doing very well at it.  MS failed to make a sizeable dent in their marketshare last generation, so they came up with a plan and went with it.  It worked--even if Sony does outsell them by a few percent (or even 10-20 million, though that won't happen), there is no way Sony will be selling 100 million consoles this generation (sorry).  This is mostly due to MS (though the $599 price at the beginning didn't help much). Therefore, even if MS never makes a dime of profit (since they're still reeling from the $1 billion) on Xbox, they potentially saved the company as a whole from losing a crapload more.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

They decided to enter into the console business at the end of the ps1 days, and Sony didn't start with their media center approach until the PSX, which didn't launch until the very end of 2003, was extremely expensive, and was only sold in Japan.

I don't think anybody was worried about Sony replacing PCs in 1999 when MS first decided to make the Xbox.

Why buy the Nintendo Wii, please consider buying a PS3. Of course a Nintendo worker will bash his rivals they are paid to paint their rivals in a negative light and push there own brand onto everyone only focusing on the positives of the Nintendo brand.

BTW give me a Nintendo DS Lite over a Nintendo Wii any day.

The PSX is the original playstation, the PS1 is the 'slim' model. At least I'm pretty sure thats the way it went. The PS2 was announced before the Xbox and I think that around that time MS might have seen the potential threat to its business, the PS2 boasted some multimedia capabilities (the DVD player in particular) that might have seemed threatening.

Even if they didn't see the threat then (which I still believe they did) they have still helped to fend it off now that it is apparent that it is a threat. The dethroning of the Playstation is a victory for MS.

Relating to what Reggie said about Microsoft...of course he would badmouth a rival company!

Relating to posts saying that the PS3 is a failure, sales wise or profit wise, it certainly is not a failure.

If you go check the hardware sales chart here on VG Chartz you will see that for the same amount of time since launch the PS3 is ahead of the XBOX 360 in sales.

And a far as profit is concerned, Sony took less than a year to get out of the red but Microsoft took more than a year before it got out of the red (Sony released a financial report and Halo 3 got Microsoft out of the red).

I am not bashing XBOX 360 but I really get pissed when people call the PS3 a failure even if the numbers indicate otherwise.

You would think that the way Google is kicking Microsoft ass they didn't have to pick a fight with Sony on top :P

I think the real issue is Microsoft failed to foresee Google and decided to get into the gaming business thinking their software business was safe...
And now they are up to their ankles in fights on both sides...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Bah, you Reggie fanboys are in for a bit of a let down this year.  If I may be so bold as to quote a prediction from my current sig:

"Reginald Fils-Aime will announce a slightly disappointing 3:1 attach rate of asses kicked to names taken."

Don't say I didn't warn you.
