Forums - Gaming - Is it time for a AAA WW2 FPS?

It's been a long time since we played a AAA WW2 shooter. Gone are the days of COD2 or MOH: Allied Assault. It seems today, the popular period to aim for is present and future. The big publishers seem to be scared to re-tread the WW2 path. It seems ever since COD: 4, all 'real-life' shooters have aimed for modern day combat and more recently, theoretical futures.

Personally, I would love to see a brand new Medal of Honor or New Gen Call of Duty game set in the WW2 era. Heck, I would even prefer to see a brand new IP aimed at that time in history. I would love to see what developers could do with new technology. Give us a true, immersive and scary experience and tell a heart touching story (even if the story is not historically accurate).

Is 'modern warfare' getting a bit long in the tooth now? Should we re-visit the path but take a fresh approach?

And now for some nostalgia...

WW2 shooters died for good reason: we got far, far, far too many of them. Between Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, and other series that don't come to mind at the moment, the vast majority of FPS games for most of a decade were WW2 games. The last major attempt, Call of Duty: World at War received a very meh reception for returning to a war that had already seen more than enough games to satisfy absolutely everybody.

I think I'd give it another few years until World War 2 games are nostalgic enough to start making some returns toward.

Yeah that's my issue though. The reason WW2 shooters are unpopular now is because we had far too many. Now, I feel like we are getting far too many moderm/future shooters. I would like the gaming industry mix things up a bit more. Let's have (for example), MOH: Space Era. Call of Duty: WW2 and New IP: Modern Combat.

I'm still kinda of burnt out on WWII shooters, there were way too many of them. Wouldn't feel at all new or interesting if they did another one. Basing it on a different historical period that hasn't been done to death would be cool though, a Korean or Vietnam one could be interesting or maybe even WWI.

Actually, yes. Battlefield: Vietnam... give us something like this again, please!

The thing is the WWII has been done a lot. Someone would need to make something completely different and risky to breath new life to the genre. I thing a TPS single player only campaign from the Axis point of view would be interesting. Controversial, yes, but it wold be new.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

WW1 would be a little too far back. WW1 was all about trench warfare and the new and improved machine gun. It would make for an exceedingly dull game. Vietnam worked okay for Battlefield as an addon, but I don't think most NA based developers would be willing to touch on that war for a full game. It's not something anybody is all that proud of and it still isn't all that talked about. The Korean War could be okay, but it came so close to WW2, it probably wouldn't feel substantially different.

It's hard finding a good war for games which is probably why as soon as WW2 got stale, developers hopped right to future wars.

It's time for a AAA WW1 game.

a ww2 battlefield would be nice, without singleplayer and with all the old features.
that would be so great.
ohh and fuck consoles, i want 128 player maps.

My exact thoughts OP.

I would absolutely love and welcome a WW2 COD or other game. World at war was a great game and came out all the way back in 2008. To recreate WW2 with today's technology would be awesome!

I hate how developers just kept recycling the WW II setting. Why not be a bit adventurous and make a WW I or Korean War shooter? This would even allow you to make some changes to the gameplay as those were very different conflicts (especially WW I).
