Forums - Microsoft - Rise of the Tomb Raider Targeting 1080p/30fps

During E3 2015, Game Director for ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ Brian Horton explained to GamingBolt how they will be pushing the power of the Xbox One to deliver a stunning gameplay and visual experience this holiday. Horton revealed that working on the definitive edition of the Tomb Raider reboot allowed them to push the Xbox One to its limits and everything that you will see in Rise of the Tomb Raider has been developed from the ground up.

“We were working during a generational shift where we were able to learn about the power of next generation consoles when we made the definitive edition of Tomb Raider but we really wanted to make Rise of the Tomb Raider from the ground up. Everything has been rewritten, the lighting engine has been rewritten, the animation engine for Lara’s facial expression has been completely redone. All of our material processing, lighting engine and everything has been overhauled to utilize the full power of the Xbox One,” Horton explained to GamingBolt.

Working closely with Microsoft meant that the development team did not face any issues with eSRAM or with the console itself, says Horton.

“We have a fantastic relationship with Microsoft. We got work directly with them and were able to understand how to get most out of the system and it has been a flawless experience so far.”

And finally, he confirmed that they are targeting 1080p resolution and 30 frames per second for the Xbox One version. And if the recent Xbox SDK updates are anything to go by, we are confident that Rise of the Tomb Raider will indeed achieve that resolution standard.

Stay tuned for our full interview with Brian Horton in the coming weeks.

HA - That's the real real reason its timed exclusive.

They can achieve parity by gimping the PS4 version without the uproar.

That's not the reason. MS is helping to fund the game.

Let's just hope that 30 is stable.

There's only 2 races: White and 'Political Agenda'
2 Genders: Male and 'Political Agenda'
2 Hairstyles for female characters: Long and 'Political Agenda'
2 Sexualities: Straight and 'Political Agenda'

They are paying for the first round of advertisement -- and possibly giving them some of their interal developers to optimize the XB1 version.

Microsoft is NOT funding the game. Don't kid yourself... it wouldn't come to PS4 if MS paid for actual development.

I think that they are paying some of the development costs actually, as well as for advertising ofc.

"And we will definitely be spending money on developing the game - I want it to look as great as it can be." The paragraph after that has some details also.

They're not funding it as much as Nintendo funded Bayonetta, but they are definitely doing a lot more than marketing and bundles.

OT: If 30 is stable then there isn't anything wrong with that.

The last TR took > 6M sales to be profitable. A large portion of their costs were advertising... probably as much as the actual development.

MS is most likely getting timed exclusivity because they volunteered to dedicate repeated stage time to the game -- and pay for advertising.

It would cost MS more money than its worth to actually "fund" any substantial portion of the game. In terms of advertising -- it becomes a wash and a loss lead so they could  try to rival Uncharted 4 -- and so they could try to claim "Best Xbox lineup ever".

Its the same situation that MS tried to do with Diablo III. They are sending internal devs onsite.

it looked very good graphically, so I'm quite a bit surprised they seem to be able to pull off 1080p/30 on X1

to be honest many titles as E3 were better graphically than I believed this gen was capable of - hopefully not too many of them will need to be divisioned downgraded
