Forums - Nintendo Discussion - being 'unique' has cost nintendo every recent generation!!!!

Why would the thing being unique make them lose every generation. Doesnt make any sense, some people love that uniqueness some dont. For Nintendo the Wii uniqueness paid off, now it didnt. Stop trying to find some cause or hidden meaning behind everything, there are so many factors playing in. You cant say that  one single thing is the cause of everything that goes wrong

I have not seen a good breakdown of these numbers or how they originated but it is often quoted.

The original Xbox had a lot of investment and was ended early with even more investment in X360.

Nintendo's obsession with been unique is killing them Gen by Gen. Sure sometimes it looks like their been succesful but really they are damaging their reputation and profits.

Here's why IMO ( for what its worth)

Nes- same as competition very successful console

SNES - same as competition success

N64- unique for generation but still regonizable to previous gens. Moderately success

Gamecube- unique discs unique look. Moderate success

Wii- totally unique makes Nintendo billions. Complete failure as it has cost Nintendo there reputation as a GAMES console. Most gamers hate this console.

Wii u- totally unique to competition. complete failure

Reputation with gamers destroyed by previous wii.

So make a console that is the same as competition in power and looks and conventional. Yes its boring but hey end of the day gamers just want a games consoles that holds up to the completion and has RESPECT from other gamers. You know those people who actually buy consoles not grandmas and OAP's and 5 year olds.

Thoughts ( expecting much hate from fans but as a fan its how I feel)

Totally unique? Before Wii U tablet DS and ios / android devices have used it a lot. How come its unique? And the fact it doesnt use the tablet controller (horn in mario kart 8) what is exactly the unique factor?

What? Term so your saying playing AC on wii u feels the same as Xbox/ PS? Sure with pro controller but not with game pad there totally differ ant therefore unique to wii u.

I find that chart kind of funky considering this year was the first time Nintendo has reported a profit in four years, whereas that chart makes it look like Nintendo has only hemorrhaged money for one year from 2010 through 2013. That said, I have literally no idea what that chart is measuring, where it came from, or how accurate it ultimately is. To me, it's about as reliable as numbers written on a napkin.

That said, I'm sure the Xbox was pretty expensive for Microsoft when it came out. Microsoft had to do R&D from scratch and release an unknown console into a market that was being dominated by Sony. That's risky and pretty much guarantees loss unless you miraculously hit it big in one try, which Microsoft most definitely did not.

that is the era when most if not all gamers are buying PS2.  hence the lost is too big when they've released a supposed to be a super console but nobody wanted it.  not sure how good the original xbox is, but it should be decent enough coming into the picture.

Nintendo got profits, but we don't know until when they would have profits.  cheap products and alienating themselves to the core gaming market is really hard.  they'll end up like with Sega if they don't play their cards right.  Next Gen console for Nintendo is key, even it is in the middle of PS4/X1's life cycle.

You are saying that the consoles are unique but you don't explain why they are unique.
Wii U for instance is not unique, it is almost the same console as Wii imo.

Well I hate the wii with a passion but love my wii u. To me looks and plays nothing like wii. And I don't need to explain the uniqueness off each ninety console. Everybody knows how they are played on this site surely. Are you telling me you didn't know N64 was cartridge with a weird(but awesome) controller for instance

You claim that Gamecube was "moderate success" while Wii was "complete failure" and "most gamers hate" Wii? Really?

It's an argument about what the systems have done for Nintendo's relationship with gamers as a whole than anything else. The Gamecube was a moderate success in that Nintendo was still trying to appeal to the core gaming crowd. The Wii was a failure in the respect that they abandoned the core gaming crowd for one that abandoned them this generation.
