No they showed off Skyward Sword well before the Wii U. They showed that game for about 2 years before it was released if I recall correctly :P

Well they showed Zelda Wii U last year so the same could be said about it.

Either way, if the NX is indeed coming next year, Zelda is sure to be cross-gen.

True, I made a mistake.

Skyward Sword was revealed in 2010 and released in 2011. The 2009 stuff was just the concept art.

The Wii U was revealed in 2011 and released in 2012.

So this may very well be the same case, we will see. I don't know if the NX releasing in 2017 is a good idea, in fact I think it is disastrous.  There has been talks that Sony wants the PS5 to come out in 2018/2019 and bring back the 4-5 year cycles. This would mean that history repeats it self and Nintendo gets cut off from the competition and third parties won't support the NX. Of course that is unless the NX is a powerhouse that can keep up with the competition. In the same manner Microsoft was able to do so with the 360.

Didn't they already do that once? I thought they showed off Skyward Sword right before it's release, and in the same conference, showed off the Wii U for the first time

They did, but it was completely different moment/phase. They were confident, and also Skyward released in 2011, while Wii U just in 2012. If what people are supposing is right (NX releasing in 2016), the impact would be much bigger than Skyward's, cause Zelda U would also be releasing by the end of 2016.

Yeah, but, if what people are supposing wrong, and it comes out 2017 then it will be the exact same senario.  I mean I know everyone on this site likes to use the 2016 NX release as if its factually true but at this point it could still go either way.

Yes, I forgot about this scenario, could very well be the case indeed.

It's funny seeing how Zelda holds importance... it can give us a better perception of Nintendo's near future as a whole right now.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

No game that was confirmed to be released in 2015 ends up being delayed with no release date in sight simply because they found more things to implement into the game. It is gonna be on NX in some shape or form. I'm thinking also that the premise of NX has changed as well. There's a lot going on at Nintendo right now, it just isn't time for us to know what it is yet.

The premise of a console that will be out within the next two years cannot change. That's not how development works. We'd already be well into the prototyping stage with almost locked down hardware.

That out of the way, there is a devil's advocate side to what you said. Zelda has always (since Aonuma and even prior honestly) had horrible feature creep. The 2015 release date was Nintendo's way of trying to force Aonuma's hand and avoid these prolonged cycles, and at some point they realized that forcing 2015 would lead to a subpar game. Like, literally subpar; bad framerate, ugly game, etc. The same thing has happened to games in the past, so it very well could be Nintendo trying one last time to stop feature creep from delaying Zelda and then giving up and deciding not to announce a date until it's 80% done. With how bad Zelda is at landing on time, that's not out of the realm of possibility.

Now I don't necessarily believe that's the case here 100%, but I also highly doubt the NX is coming out as a console next year in time for Zelda. I think it WILL be cross platform, but the NX console likely won't hit until 2017, with the NXDS/whatever they wanna call it coming out next year after all of the final wave of 3DS games hit. I think it's a bit of both columns.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

It will be Twilight Princess'd.
Nintendo denied in 2006 that TP was coming to Wii. Now they are just confirming that it is coming to Wii U, not denying thte won't come to NX.

"Talk about NX" =/= "reveal/showcase NX"

It won't be weird getting Zelda next year if all they do is give us a taste of the next system. Skyward Sword wasn't weird, and that was just a year away from Wii U. This is of course coming from someone who's certain we won't get NX until the end of 2017 at the earliest.

I don't see what's wrong with it.
They'd talk about WiiU/3DS stuff at first (including Zelda U) and then they'd announce the NX, which they'll talk about again in E3 2017 right before a holiday release.
