Forums - Gaming - Miyazaki and Ueda meet - fate comes full circle

Shamelessly stolen from SonyGAF with an overly dramatic title

For anyone who doesn't know the story, Ico was one of the games that inspired Miyazaki to leave his cushy job at Oracle and start as a programmer at From Software

Putting aside my opinion of the Souls series, did anyone also notice the influence in Demon's Souls? I did, particularly the first area (after the prologue/tutorial). Aside from the look of the environments and atmosphere, small puzzles were also reminiscent of the PS2 game. Not so much in the following Souls games, except maybe for a smaller area here and there.

Another common thing, despite not being exclusive to them, was how they told you nothing and you just learned by doing, gradually.

Two great devs, a PlayStation to unite them.

Nintendo is selling their IPs to Microsoft and this is true because:

I'd like to see this guy try his hand at a King's Field game. You know From... that series you completely forgot about? How about giving us the hardcore what we want?

Not related to Miyazaki but another influenced product was Prince of Persia: Sands of time, who blatantly ripped off entire sections from ICO. Those who played both games know what I'm talking about

What was once an obscure niche game is now increasingly cited as a source of inspiration for current games. And I don’t just mean indie efforts like Brothers. It’s also cited as an influence on the biggest of the big triple-A blockbusters, like Halo and Uncharted. Everywhere you look, you’re standing in Ico’s shadow.

“I think there’s a lot of similarity in just the core relationship between the boy in Ico and Princess Yorda, and Chief and Cortana, that bond they have, that need to be there for one another,” Halo 4‘s creative director http://techland.time.com/2012/11/05/ico-influenced-chief-cortana-bond-in-halo-4-says-director/#ixzz2eWlcYnbu">Josh Holmes told Time on its release last year. “I’ll always be influenced by that game, probably in ways that I don’t even understand, because it’s definitely one of the pinnacle moments in my gaming career.”

During the development of Uncharted 3 on PlayStation 3, Naughty Dog creative director Nate Wells name-checked Ico as “the kind of game… we’re focused on making right now.” And while film director Guillermo del Toro loves many different videogames, he said in 2008 that Ico and Colossus were the “only two games I consider masterpieces.”

Is Ueda now working again for Sony or what? Are they buddies again?

I am from Switzerland, so please accept my bad english ;)

"Normally, most of the B-teams of the DC Universe should have no problem with either Goku or any other SSJ out there, Gotenks and Vegito included. I think Black Adam would be enough, easily, to end them both. Maybe Booster Gold, if he could stop being a fuck up for a while."

He's never stopped.. he has his own independent studio, but he's working with Sony until TLG is finished.

As i know he left Sony long time ago, but he is working for tlg as an independet developer with team ico. He wasnt very happy in the end with Sony, and then he left. I was ask my self why Sony gave him so much credit at the conference, so maybe they found together again. Would be great

He was fine with Sony, him and Shu have even appeared publicly in japanese events like live streaming games and playing together, etc. There was no bad blood, he just wanted the freedom that comes with being in an independent studio, like so many others these days.

There are two moments in gaming for me that I consider the most important and influential. The first, chronologically speaking, was stumbling over Final Fantasty VI by sheer chance, which made me interested in gaming again after drifting away due to the stagnant period where every other game was a platformer or a beat 'em up with an idiotic story and characters I did not care about.

The other moment was when I played ICO. It completely changed everything I believed about the potential of gaming. It was subtle, it was atmospheric, and it was intimate, all of which were almost unheard of in a medium that was generally hamfisted and simplistic when it came to story-telling. I had never been so angry at an antagonist and I had never been so determined to save a video-game character. That it did this to me without words is flat-out amazing. It was like someone removed a veil from my eyes and told me that gaming could be more, a LOT more than I knew.

There is no doubt in my mind that this little game few people played changed the industry.
