The problem is they bet the farm on a controller gimmick + underpowered console formula again, but this time the controller gimmick did not take off as casuals became enchanted by smart devices that had even easier to play games for free (kinda hard to compete against that). The fact of the matter is the "hardcore" audience that buys PS3/360 was never going to be a "Wii" to be their main game console either, didn't matter how many multiplats Nintendo got. That brand is synonmous with casual gaming ... except now it doesn't have any casual fans left. |
I agree the "Wii Brand" was not the right brand for this gen Nintendo console and i d think the Wii U would have struggled bu they could have sold more hardware and software, not lost as much market share as they have and maybe most importantly gained respect among more customers/gamers to set themselves up well entering next gen- But now they have lost tons of market share, loat alot of respect among the industry as well as gamers and created alot of distrust- So they will need to invest heavily up front in launching thier next hardware with no guarantees-
Sony got off to a terrible strat w the PS4 but learned from ts mistakes and worked very hard to gain both teir reputation as a brand as well as market share back - doing so made it much eaiser to launch the PS4 with strong momentum at the start-
MSFT had a horrible luanch for the XB1 but quickly made major changes, bit the bullet iand is earning their reptutation back day by day and doing a pretty good job at moving hardware and software )far better than Nintendo) But Nintenod mae very little effort to right the ship and it shows
