Forums - Sony - hypothetical feature for Project Morpheus.

Note* This thread contains several assumptions and a whole lot of guesswork. Feel free to challenge my assumptions or guesswork, but be aware that the amount of hard evidence on this subject thus far is rather sparse.

TL:DR version at the bottom.

It's pretty safe to assume by now that most, if not all VR HMDs will come with some form of cinema or video watching functionality. Oculus has Oculus cinema for it's Rift, as well as the Gear VR, with several third party apps already out for use with those as well as the lowly Google Cardboard.

The feature has had both positive and negative feedback. Ranging from some calling it Gear VRs best feature, to the decidedly less enthusiastic reaction to it's implementation in the Oculus/Microsoft partnership. Either way, the feature seems here to stay and I personally think it may end up being difficult to sell an HMD that doesn't offer the functionality.

This brings me to two...observations about Sonys Project Morpheus.

1. Sony has yet to show, or mention any video playing, or cinema style functionality for the HMD.

2. We've yet to see any menus or out of game interface for Morpheus.

The first one isn't all that surprising. Sony since even before the start of the gen has put much of it's focus on games, games, games, and it's unlikely that they would want to hurt that message by focusing on other multimedia functions for it's all important new headset too early.

The second one I find a bit odd because I can really only think of two reasons why they haven't shown any menus yet. The first being that they dont' really have an interface ready yet. The second, and the one I'm guessing/hoping is correct. Is that it just uses the regular PS4 menu.

So here come a few assumptions. I think it's safe to say that the Morpheus is going to need a way to allow players to switch between games and apps without removing the headset. I also think it makes the most sense to just allow the Morpheus to display the regular PS4 home screen as it's something players will already be familiar with and will really demonstrate full PS4 intergration.

I think this will be pretty easy to do since the Morpheus has it's own box that alters the image for use in the HMD. I'm certainly not saying that we should be seeing the PS4 home screen stretched over a 100 degree FOV, but I think it should be easy enough to show the 2D menu in a similar fashion to how other headsets display movies (or Xbox games) on a virtual 2D screen.

So here's where I think this gets interesting. If they can allow players to use the regular PS4 menu on the Morpheus, shouldn't players also be able to use any game or app on their PS4 using the Morpheus aswell? I think that it could end up being a pretty big feature for the Morpheus for three reasons.

Netflix, Youtube, and Vue.

The impact of Netflix I think is pretty obvious. As it stands there is no official netflix VR functionality and I think Netflix fits in quite naturally with the idea of the VR cinema and could be a huge selling point for gamers and non-gamers alike. Youtube falls under a similar umbrella where being able to access those videos through an HMD could help push VR with a more casual market. Vue I think presents an opportunity for Morpheus that really nobody else has, and that's because it's a live tv service and as far as I'm aware nobody else offers a way to watch live tv through an HMD.

Overall, I think being able to use all three apps (as well as pretty much any normal PS4 game or app) through Morpheus could provide people with a new way to experience old content and could end up being a pretty strong selling point for the device.

TL:DR. Could the Morpheus display any PS4 game or app (such as Netlfix)?

Am I being stupid here? If you think so, feel free to say so. I only ask that you explain how I'm being stupid haha. Oh! and feel free to comment if you agree aswell!

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

yes i always been hoping that too, so that i can lay on my bed with any position and still able to play ordinary PS4 games or watching movies with Morphues

I was thinking about that too, though that might have to wait until we start seeing wireless VR.  Sadly, that may have to wait a generation or two and even that's assuming of course that this generation of VR is sucessful.

In the end it doesn't matter what they have or lack right now, thou i aprreciate their (anyone investing in VR) efforts of course as its necesary, everyone is overestimating VR or rather, the current state of VR, we are still some years away of seeing its true potential, it doesn't matter whatVR does now because even if it ''didn't'' have this or that feature or if it included this other one the market is still too small, there will be a future when everyone has easy to wield & wear, affordable VR, just like there are (cheap) top specs hand computers right now, something many though impossible some years ago, but TODAY is not the day.

This is the future, and i'm not questioning it, we just still have some miles to go, again, in case my point was lost, that's why it doesn't matter what features VR has or doesn't have right now, it is in the pahse of ''oh that dog is cute but i won't take it home'' that tablets, videogames, and every product we use today went through, it is not a definig phase, and i think any discussion that one could have is not that important, but that's just me. xoxo

I always thought they were all wireless. I'm literally shocked right now! That's so lame, this turned me off completely. .-.

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

Really? Have you ever seen any of the demos? You thought that these HMDs were running high definition, super low latency audio and video without any wired connection?

I've seen some, but, nope, never noticed. And yes, I thought it would be wireless. This is pretty sad to me.

I hear this quite a bit, but it never really made sense to me...

Sure, now we have fairly low cost smartphones (which is largely due to them being subsidized by plans). But Smartphones didn't just pop up out of nowhere as we have them today. No consumer product launches at the peak of it's potential.

Is VR in it's current form perfect? Of course not, but it certainly provides a compelling enough experience to be sold as a consumer product.

Oh...sorry to ruin that for you then...

I don't know anything about any ''plan'', and of course smarphones didn't pop out of nowhere, but that's exactly it, in fact that's exactly what i said, the orignal iphone was a piece of crap that most people bought for the novelty, today people have counters to those samsung, and apple conferences where they announce their products and up and coming brands are growing at a strong pace, that's what i mean with VR, yes some people are probably gonna buy it, yes it is necesary as I just said, to go throught these phaces (obviously) but right now, Oculus FE is in ''orignal iphone'' state, it has nothing really worthy for the ''common'' consumer to offer, later, when the tech advances is when we are gonna see improvements and those VR makers are gonna offer the people something that they want because they will be able to afford it; ultimately, if this or that VR set has some feature this other doesn't is not gonna make a difference in sales or development, VR has nothing to offer right now except for the people who want (and can afford) to try something new, people will be paying to be Beta testers which IS NOT something bad, its just that who really cares which features are on the Beta?
