Forums - Nintendo - Should Nintendo target Unpopular Genres

Nintendo should:

be funding classic game styles! 6 25.00%

be looking to follow modern trends. 6 25.00%

try to find something more innovative. 7 29.17%

stick to what they're doing now. 5 20.83%

And by "unpopular" I actually mean genres that aren't "trendy" at the moment, as I think many still have many fans.  So for example, areas like JRPG, especially turn-based or even classic top-down FF-style games.  Or side scroling action titles.  I think they should - or at least should have - and I think it's a big missed opportunity for them.  Reasons:

-Nintendo is already retro and already feeding some less "current" gaming styles.  Between their family-friendly approach, their numerious side-scroling and 3D platformers, Xenoblade is classic JRPG and Zelda is a classic-style adventure without many modern stereotypes.

-Sony and MS platforms are full of AAA titles following modern trends (especially 1st- and 3rd- party shooters) leaving little room for classic genres with less production efforts to get much attention.

-There are several well-respected classic game devs that have left their former employers and famous game franchises to form new studios and have had to resort to kickstarter to fund their classic-style games.  Hironobu Sakaguchi, Keiji Inafune and Koji Igarashi.  These developers may have been or may still be open to strong partnerships if they are given proper funding and freedom to realize their dreams.

-These classic genres are cheaper and faster to produce than many AAA titles with extensive 3D models and FMV.  They also have passionate fans who can make the games profitable.

Nintendo has already done this sort of thing with Bayonetta 2 and Devil's 3rd and those are good steps.  But where I think they have dropped the ball is neither of those titles have passionate, older, content-starved fan bases like the older game developers mentioned above.  Titles like B2 and D3 are available elsewhere.  They also aren't associated with "classic Nintendo" like Castlevania, Mega Man and Final Fantasy are.  Nintendo needs to tap back into their dissenfranchised fans who loved their games in the NES and SNES days.  Many of those fans deeply miss these types of titles as we've seen with the support of the kickstarters.

Nintendo should be funding exclusive:

-Mighty Number 9

-Bloodstained

-and a classic, beautifully produced (possibly top-down exploration view), turn-based Final Fantasy type game by Mistwalker.

They should market themselves as a true alternative to the current trend of gaming on XBox and Playstation, and target hardcore gamers and retro-title lovers, the type that have Mario figurines and Cloud Strife statues on their shelves.  I believe if you capture this audience, more casual gamers will follow.

XCX, B2 and D3 do a good job of addressing both gaps in the Nintendo lineup and also addressing genres that get a little less attention in todays market; but they're not enough.  If there were another 3 (or more) games that were truly classic in their style coming soon to Wii U, it would become a system that really caters to the older gamer bored of annual COD.

modern games like uncharted a cinematic old school action adventure game and like halo 5 a classic fps. or like beyond: 2 souls a point and click adventure game with amazing graphics or forza, a classic car simulator with great graphics. Or maybe bloodborne, a classic modern action game (3d Castlevania) or maybe like Quantum Break, a classic Max Payne Game with a cool "gotta go fast" mechanic. Or like Knack, a new age ps2 game, or maybe a classic fighting game like KI.

Kickstarter has highlighted devs trying to get funding for things Nintendo would have been wise to do. The banjo and kazooie spiritual successor by former rare staff, for example, is something nintendo should have funded long ago.

I think that if they focused on doing remasters of key JRPG games and revamping some of the old JRPGs series would go a long way in drawing in gamers to their console. The games need to look like AAA games though. None of that "artistic" style graphics to hide the lack of quality graphics.

So, you're saying that Nintendo should fund games that indies are already making and releasing on PC and PS4?

I would really like to see more japanese centric games make it outside of Japan. With the marketing effort I think that they could really make a future for the Fatal Frame series in the west.

None of the games you mentioned are in any way "old school".  Except maybe KI.  All of the games you listed are Gen 6 style games and onward.  Which shows you are unable to grasp the concept and wouldn't be the target market anyway.  You list yourself as 21, so it's hardly surprizing.  The genres made in your lifetime are all readily available on XBOne and PS4.

If you were older, you would have grown up with games like Mega Man and Castlevania (side-scroling action titles) or Final Fantasy 1-6, top-down classic RPGs with turn-based combat.  These games are mostly now only available through kickstarter and by indie devs.  I believe there is a tremendous market for modern takes of these classic styles.  Exclusive support of well-produced NES-SNES style games by well-respected game directors could attract millions of older hardcore gamers to Nintendo platforms.

Yes.  Do it and do it better, with premium talent and somewhat bigger budgets than most indies have available.

I want them to stick with what they are doing (beside wishing they would increase productivity) BUT the money is in following popular trends.

The money is in the American market mainly and games like COD, FIFA, Ass Creed are big sellers.
