So 136K + 145K confirmed for Splatoon from the biggest 2 markets. looks like a ~400K opening week for retail worldwide. It's interestingly poised in sales right now. It's a decent start to life as an IP, but it needs very strong legs to become Nintendo's next big thing because a 400K global start (and 136K US) has not immediatelky propelled it into prominence.

And please none of the "only 2 days" almost every game only gets 2 days in its opening week and the big selling games pull in big numbers in those 2 days. It's called pre-orders.

The one thing about only being 2 days in May, is that it's 2nd NPD month should be good too with Sunday sales from opening weekend contributing to the legs that will come naturally for the first few weeks post release. this can easily mean June>May for Splatoon.

So PS4 = 152,000
Wii U = 42,500

Bad numbers all around.

Not surprised by Splatoon's relatively low numbers in the states. NOA's marketing was targeted exclusively at children (in addition to launching some of the absolute worst advertising campaigns I've ever seen) while Japan's broader demographic appeal and better ads sold twice as many units relative to it's install base.

The witcher 3 sold ~700k,60% on PS4 pretty much on par with UK!

ROW though...

There is also the fact that japanese audience have a soft spot for "goofy" things while american ones on the other hand....welp..even kids want to play GTA 5 these days.... or COD....

edit: sorry for dubs

Splatoon had 41k digital sales during the opening week in Japan.

400k opening week for a Wii U game is very good lol. You won't see many Vita games do that.

PS4 just wiped out the gap from the last month.

Yeah, so basically we're back to the Jan-March cumulative gap, with June shaping up to be a substantial win for PS4. After that I think things should be relatively close for 2 months as people just breathe in waiting for Halo 5 to hit.

I'm not sure what to think about 42K for Wii U. On the one hand Splatoon had a decent enough launch to boost Wii U sales for the final 2 days of the month, shudder to think what Wii U sales would have been without those 2 days of extra sales. On the other hand, Splatoon's system selling potential will probably cut across 2-3 weeks in June, so that may give some good number for June.

When was the last time the best selling hardware for May early in a new gen was just 152K? Certainly not  last gen, at least not once Wii came on stream.

136k not including digital for 3 days is pretty darn good. We'll see how it looks next month with more than 3 days on the market.

Technically 2 days (NPD didn't count the 31st).

Really good showing for Splatoon! It opened better than games that are already at 1m+ (like Hyrule Warriors, NSLU, DKC: TF, WWHD, etc.). Should have good legs too, if Japan is anything to go by.
