Forums - Nintendo - Splatoon - Nintendo trying to change the DLC formula.

Nintendo has certaintly struck gold with their latest game Splatoon, Capturing the fun of FPS games without the violence. Opening the market to everyone including younger kids that have always wanted to play FPS but that have stricted parents and they don't have access to FPS till they are at least 13-14 years old.

Regardless of critical success of the game seem to me that Nintendo release a basic version of the game and is holding back much of the online content for future DLC release. I think the fact that Splatoon release with only 5 multiplayer maps was by design and part of a new online strategy by Nintendo.

Instead of having some content lock away and to be release in future paid DLC. Nintendo is planning on releasing lots of future free DLC contents. Each DLC releases will result in free marketing for the game when gaming media report the news. Each new maps, game modes and weapons free DLC release would also create lots of word of mouth advertising has player try out the new content and tell their friends.

Splatoon was design to be a multiplayer game and did not even feature a single player mode when it was announce. It's clear that with only 5 multiplayer maps, Nintendo is clearly holding back the online content for future DLC.

Yes, they are holding back content. But it will be free. So I'm fine with this (but not with the price, but that is for another thread)

Technically it's not even DLC, so far it's all been on the disc already.

If I think about it as buying a $40 game but included a $20 season pass for everything after, then the game price becomes tolerable. I invested crazy hours into Splatoon, so even if I just think about it as a $60 game I'd be ok with it.

"On-disc DLC" is an accepted phrase, though, regardless of how mutually exclusive those two things are. It's really a distinction without difference in this case.

Honestly, if that's the case, I think they should've had some of the post-launch content of the game avaliable at launch, as I felt like the $60USD mark was a bit too high for this game.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Well they have added 2 weapons and a map since launch, so its not like its all that light on content. And when they add the other 4 maps and extra mode, it will be worth the $60 easy. Plus it looks like there's room for a 3rd map in the rotation in the future. What I want to see is a hard mode for single player and a boss run mode, where you fight harder incarnations of the bosses. This would be awesome if it could be done with 2 player co op.

People are very butt hurt on how it's $60. They don't know how hours work. They can get 100 hours playing Xenoblade Chronicles or 100 hours playing Rhythm Heaven  - both having their prices range from an economic history as of today, but that's beside the point. The point is that anybody can have so much fun with the littlest of games, or have the most boredom with the highest prestigious games.

I understand Splatoon is still having content being released from Nintendo, but the game still packs a lot of hours into it, for being a $60 game - and this is a fact. As a consumer, I would really wish to have the most content released at one time, but the timed-release content makes us coming back.

There's certainly verbal violence in this apartment; I've lost my temper on occasion when some camping fool hiding under the ink pops up and splats me with a roller for the umpteenth time... Nothing makes me feel sillier than shouting angrily at a game about squid teenagers shooting ink on the floor. :D

But yeah, given how fun the game already is I have no problem with their approach (I kinda like it in fact). If the game felt incomplete and held back I'd not be ok with this, but it gives you something to look forward to as you enjoy what is already available.

I do wonder how much of this is strategy and how much is the result of having to release it early. Probably a bit of both.

That really only apply to people that only have a WiiU. Between IOS games, PC games, WiiU & Xbox one. $60 for Splatoon is simply not worth my time or money.

Splatoon might be fun but it's not a big budget game, just because you play Angry bird for over 100 hours doesn't mean you should pay $60 for it. Especially at the state they release the game. I would of much prefered a $40 release with paid DLC for extra content.
