Forums - Nintendo - UK Retailer Confirms It’s Ditching Support for Wii U and Wii U Games… Sort of

Last week a rumour emerged that UK retailer ASDA (part of the Walmart group) would be dropping Nintendo’s consoles from its shelves and the games would be going along with them.

Well, it turns out it’s true. Sort of.

We’ve heard this exact rumour before, in fact, it was only last year that rumours floated that ASDA wouldn’t be stocking Nintendo Wii U consoles due to poor sales, but that never came to be and they remained on the shelves ever since.

We got in contact with ASDA in an attempt to clear up this rumour once and for all. In a statement to The Games Cabin, ASDA confirmed that it would be dropping all support for the Nintendo Wii U consoles, though no specific reason was given. However, here’s where the ‘sort of’ comes into play. The American owned company will still stock some Nintendo Wii U games from time to time, most notably the big first party releases such as Mario Kart.

The retailer will also still stock Nintendo 3DS consoles and games, so it’s not everything with a Nintendo sticker being ditched – just the Nintendo Wii U.

It’s a shame, but that’s business, unfortunately. The Wii U hasn’t had the best sales in the UK but a steady trickle of consoles are making their way into the homes of avid Nintendo fans. The Wii U will still be available in-store and at a discount until stocks last, but after that, the folks in charge of securing products for ASDA won’t be ordering any more units, so if you’ve got vouchers or reward points, get down to your local branch and use them!

I was in berlin not too long ago, and nintendo is preatty huge in germany. UK has mostly always been on the playstation side. Also sweden is now more picking up on the Wii U and its a new console, its getting a bit bigger here in scandinavia. I just hope Nintendo can show off more of Zelda Wii U. I think that can convince alot of people

I do not know that for a fact, but i seen some sales numbers for up here, but they are not 100%, but seem mostly legit. Also its been bigger here with events and such, like splatoon going to big cities here in sweden, and big events that are nintendo related. So its also a bit guess. Also with more new games like Splatoon, the news and media spread fast :)

Wii U is being phased out by Nintendo themselves.

Ah, well that's just great then. There has been a lot of recent discount and sales which could have spiked up the sales numbers.
As for the bigger events, I can't say I've noticed myself. But then again I don't live in a big city either =p
And yeah news do spread fast

UK is playstation and xbox

Asda hasn't stocked wii u games or wii u for years. But I bought Mario kart 8 from there. And they had super smash bros. Smaller games like Donkey Kong and stuff no chance. Its weird cos in germany some shops wii u sections are bigger then ps4 and way bigger then xbone

I hope this forces nintendo to drop the price and make the console slighty more relevant. Even if they just remove the gamepad to lower the entry price would be good enough. I just really dont want to see them release a new console because this one dies and people wont jump in like they did for sega.
