Forums - Nintendo - Splatoon Update #1 Impressions: Zapper, Port Mackerel, Splat Zones!

Love Port Mackerel, possibly my favorite map. I'm okay with the NES Zapper (the weapon is powerful enough at close range but I prefer slightly more accuracy. I hate Splat Zones. It just feels so poorly designed. Run to win on most maps, if you can cap first you win almost every time. The timer is too low for flanking to be viable unless your whole team actually cooperates (which happened for me once total). Most weapons simply aren't viable either in my experience, and to top it all off you get all or nothing in experience. Not impressed at all with how shoddy it is. At higher levels I'm sure it's not as bad but I'd have much preferred swapping between Ranked turf wars and Ranked Splat Zones to start.

You should check out my YouTube channel, The Golden Bolt!  I review all types of video games, both classic and modern, and I also give short flyover reviews of the free games each month on PlayStation Plus to tell you if they're worth downloading.  After all, the games may be free, but your time is valuable!

I would also like to say that I think both the bubble shield and Kraken are bullshit. They are essentially get out of jail free cards. And then not only do they prevent death, they also generally lead to the other players death, which is a double whammy.

I bet the Wii U would sell more than 15M LTD by the end of 2015. He bet it would sell less. I lost.

Don't know the exact numbers but the less time you have left the higher the delay will be. I like this as it allows matches to last the whole 5 minutes and makes you feel like you always have a chance even if the enemy only have a few seconds left, and likewise you can never get comfortable even with an early lead.

A single Inkstrike alone can't take over the zone, only neutralize, and I think that's fair since it's not that useful otherwise in this mode.

Honestly, I think an inkstrike by itself can take over a zone. And it would still be useful because an inkstrike a main purpose is to zone. It gives your team that little bit of coverage needed to take a zone.

Well, it can't, lol. Also I said "that" useful, as in as good as the other super weapons, all of whom are supposed to be powerful.

I mean, how can you know for sure? Based on my experiences, I think it can, do I guess I'll just disagree.

i hate to say it, but the new mode is just screaming for voice chat, its hard to coordinate anything without it

By seeing an Inkstrike only neutralize a capped zone with no other factors or interference, and the Inkstrike was positioned completely inside of it.

Some zones are different sizes. Saltspray rig (or whatever the name is) has quite a small zone and that is where I have played most of my matches. It was last night when they first unlocked ranked battles. If I recall correctly, you said you would be asleep during that time, so maybe you have yet to experience that map.

Psh no of course I was playing! I didn't actually start playing Ranked until today though, which had Urchin Underpass and Arowana Mall, the former of which being where my example took place. Guess I'd have to get back to ya on Salt Spray Rig specifically, but in general I think it's perfectly fine.

Liked the new map, great for the seeker sub weapon as launching it then following really moves you along those corridors.

Didn't play with the Zapper.

Didn't make it anywhere in Zone play rank wise. Seems like for every match I'd win I'd lose 2 . I also don't think it switches the teams up much. We had one B rank guy in the lobby and out of 10 games he was never once on my team.

Also for the record you only get nothing for losing if the other team runs their timer all the way down(i.e. knocks you out). If they don't and both team have some timer left then it scores very similarly to turf wars.

Oh yeah I also had just one match where the other team got shut completely out. They never controlled the zone even once. That was sweet, but out of 20 or so matches it only happened once. Has anyone else done this or had it done to them?

On the maps with only one zone, it's incredible how many times a team NEVER controls the zone once. Sometimes it's my team, but more often it's the other team (not saying it's me, just saying it seems to happen to the opposing team more often than to my team). It sucks some major balls for whichever team gets shut out. It seemed to happen most on Urchin Underpass, but it also happened a decent amount on Arowana mall and Saltspray Rig.
