Yeah, I bought it at release and played for a few months, then played again at 2 other points after it went F2P. It started out pretty meh, but they made alot of improvements over time, and they've made even more improvements since I last played it 2 years ago.

The space combat is fairly slow and tactical, it's alot of fun. The ground combat started super slow and boring, but they improved it by making it faster and adding a shooter mode, and it plays much better now. They started with just 2 factions, Federation and Klingon, but the Klingons were a shell of a faction at release. They've since greatly improved the Klingons and added a Romulan faction as well. After picking your faction, you can pick between 3 classes, Tactical, Science, and Engineering, each offer different roles both in space and on the ground. You start with a very basic, outdated ship, and as you level up an get promoted you unlock better ships. The missions started out as very basic, generic MMO style missions, but over time they added new ones that are much better and revamped some of the old ones. The game is supported by microtransactions after it went F2P, but they're mainly cosmetic stuff, and you can earn currency in-game to buy the microtransactions. Story wise, it's set in the Prime Universe (not the JJ Abrams movie reboot universe). It's set 30 years after the movie Star Trek Nemesis. PvP is handled via matchmaking, so there aren't any PvP servers like some MMO's.
