I disagree with the prevailing mentality in this thread that a 4TF console is a bad idea.
I have no idea if the rumours are true, but taking them at face value looks something like this:
- 4 TF Next Gen Base Box (Lockhart)
- 10 TF PS5
- 12 TF Next Gen Advanced Box (Anaconda)
And right now also the Xbox One X sitting at 6TF.
I have three points:
- Price is absolutely key for Microsoft. They have to find a way to deliver good looking games at 1080p and at 1080p natively on 4k TVs for the mainstream.Â
- Microsoft has a significant hardcore fanbase (us) that is valuable but not, on its own, large enough to sustain a console. Having Anaconda gets us, while allowing Microsoft to market 'the most powerful console family.'
- I am far from a tech wiz, having only taken rudimentary coding courses, but its clear that scaling graphics to a number of power points is becoming a relatively simple staple of modern game engines. As long as Lockhart is powerful enough not to hold back features on more powerful consoles as opposed to graphics, we are fine. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I cannot think of features that might have been present in PS4 Pro and Xbox One X games that don't exist because of the Xbox One S and PS4.
In a nutshell, a 10-12TF console will look noticably better that a 4TF console. But it will not be a 2.5-3X difference. Side-by-side it will look worse, but your average gamer will want next gen games at a very accessible price point. I may not love it, but I can see significant market share, profit and scale advantages to this strategy. And all three of those generally mean more and better games for us to play.

I'm with you. A 4+ TB console won't hold back anything at all for Anaconda like people seem to think here.
The difference between 1080p and 4k is already big enough that a 4k Anaconda game will easily run also on Lockhart even if they squeeze everything possible out of Anaconda to get the best graphics.
Well, as long as the rest of the architecture will be the same or almost the same.
Nintendo can sell millionsof consoles simply because they offer games people want.
If MS can offer those games as well, they can sell a lot of Lockhart consoles to people who prefer a lower price with worse resolution without holding back graphics in the graphics war between Anaconda and PS5.
And with such a “cheap“ console to play all next gen games, they could also manage to get a good part of the FIFA/Madden whatever crowd who just want to play these kind of games.
