Well, now you can name 11 Nintendo franchises smaller than Metroid, 12 if you count Starfox. :P

And Star Fox is arguably not even smaller than Metroid.

But I really shouldn't start this.

It is arguable, yeah.

Starfox has less entries, so it's more concentrated.

No Metroid game has sold as much as SF64, but SF has four games over a million in sales where Metroid has eight.

I mean, Star Fox sold a lot when it was at its best - Metroid, despite usually being very good, never sold past 3 million. Not considering spin-offs, remakes or collections (except Metroid: Zero Mission), Star Fox has an average of 2.1m sold per game, while Metroid has 1.6m.

In terms of wide recognition, Metroid and Samus are very well known, but I feel like Star Fox is at least on par - the fact it was present on the Nintendo 64 (and it was the biggest and best game in franchise) makes a huge difference.

That average is boosted by the one hit game (Starfox 64) being way higher than any of the others. Metroid is more consistent in that respect, with more games total, and more that sold well.

Like we said, it's arguable.

It's more consistent because of consistent quality.

I'd say Star Fox would have never had a game below 2.5m had it had GameCube, Wii and Wii U entries of similar or better quality as the N64 one, but now I'm getting all hypothetical. Either way, I'm just a bit annoyed at someone saying it's smaller than Metroid, when it's really not depending on the way you see things.

I guess the big question is whether the Wii U Starfox and whether or not we get a Wii U Metroid will pull one definitively ahead of the other...
